Column shifted 97+ MJ

Recommended Posts

I have a 97 dash in my truck and in my quest to be different and totally piss off the Jeep world I have decided to do something off the wall.

I put a "couch" out of a El Camino in it to start with. I have modified some Rover speaker pods for my doors. I already have a cut down XJ OHC in it. So what's next???

I am going to make it a blue interior, velour bench seat, column shifted, 97 MJ.

That should be different!

I wonder if a column out of a late ‘90s Ram or Dakota would be comparable.

I was curious as to the source of the column shifter as well.

97-99 Dakota/Durango looks like a promising source. We'll see once my column arrives.

Here it is!

The initial fit up is going great. I just need to find a shifter cable and splice wiring together where needed and it will be done.

Yesssssss

I've always been a fan of the column shift. Maybe its because my folks astro was a column shift and I just got used to it? :D

It's finished! This was a very fun and challenging project.

I had to re-pin everything in the column to work with the Jeeps wiring.

It is worth it to me to have the only true, full 97 conversion with a column shift.

Yes there are guys who slapped the new dash in and kept the old column and wiring. I don't do things that way.

I will finish taping and routing the wires down the column once it stops raining. To say I'm proud is an understatement!

And the shifter changes the gears like it should. Wait until you see the gear indicator being made!

Wooah boy. If you can get it to electronically shift without having a silly shifter cable, that would be awesome! It's such a hassle when removing the gauge cluster with the mechanical column shift. You have to remove the bottom dash panel, mark on the column body where the metal clip was, carefully remove the clip then remove the front dash trim and the cluster. such a pain.

There is a 1" LED shift position indicator being made as we speak. The plan is park ard reverse will be red and the other positions will be blue.

Neat!

Nickintime made a AW4 shifter. I think his allows for manual override of the gears or something.
