89eliminator Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 ok. a few days ago, i went to start the truck and it started, revved up then died. i tried to start it again with no luck. so i turned the key on and listed for the fuel pump but didn't hear anything. so today, i was going to take the pump out and get a replacement. but i decided to check the wiring first to see if the pump was getting any power. well it wasn't getting 12V so i hooked it directly to a battery and the pump turned on. i'm stumped on what could be the issue.
JeepcoMJ Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 ignition control? ballast resistor? (you should still have one)
Eagle Posted December 28, 2007 Posted December 28, 2007 Ballast resistor. The grey/white ceramic thingie on the inside of the left front fender, by the air box. Two wires coming off it. Jumper them and see what happens. Yes, you can drive it jumpered. The 87s didn't have it. The only reason to drop the voltage was to reduce the noise of the fuel pump -- which was more noticeable in an XJ than an MJ.
89eliminator Posted December 29, 2007 Author Posted December 29, 2007 and the problem was........the ballast resistor! i was working on my winch the other day and i have the solenoid box where the airbox was. i must have knocked a wire off because it was just dangling. plugged it back in and it worked. at least i didn't have to spend any money to fix it.
