89 Renix dies at throttle tip in

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, this is driving my nuts. I spent 3 months going over this thing for a big trip in 2 days. It was running good until today. It has always seemed to idle just a little rough, but not too bad. Now half of the time when I try to take of it will stall. If you hammer it, it will drive through it.

I have a REM2+ and went through all of the settings and didn't really see anything out of wack. I did get loop rich a few times and loop lean once. I threw the O2 from the 88 in with no change, (both Bosch units). TPS looks to be working smoothly. Fuel pressure was 30 with hose attached and 38 without.

New indexed distributor, plugs, wires, IAC, cleaned TB, fuel pump and filter, tank removed and cleaned. NTK CPS with bolt hole mod. The Jeep sat for 10 years before I got it. The ground by the dipstick is good and it has new battery cables with extra grounds added. Resistance ohm test from the TPS to battery read 0 and the wiggle test didn't show anything. No change in RPM when I sprayed starting fluid. I'm running out of ideas here. I did notice that the injectors looked a little different and the PN shows they are from a 1996+. That wouldn't explain the new dying though, but could be an issue? Thanks!

Good idea. Disconnect the vacuum to the EGR and plug it. See what happens.

Keep in mind though that your EGR may not be closing completely causing a hidden vacuum leak.

Have you ever snugged up your intake manifold bolts?

cap and rotor replaced or not?

New cap & rotor. I did disconnect the EGR vacuum hose and apply vacuum with a  vacuum pump and the engine died, so I believe it is working properly. Not sure how I'd figure out if its slightly leaking?  The light surging at idle has been there all along. A few times in the last few days if you give it just a little gas in neutral, it would start surging and sound like a funny car. Maybe 200-1200 RPM back and forth. Let off and reapply the gas and it might not do it. I replaced the exhaust manifold and retorqued the the bolts once, but I'll double check them. It really does act like a vacuum leak.

Watched your video and it was interesting that it didn't die the second time you gave it gas. All my random no start or rough running issues, usually involved bad electrical connection to the CPS, shaking from the engine would cause it to come loose or ground itself. I know you said you replaced it but check the connector on the harness side, also pull back the loom around your harness and look for shoddy fixes by previous owners. Another thing to check is to verify that the CPS is routed properly and away from the hot exhaust manifold, if you look at cruiser's website you can see that you route it all the way to the other side of the engine. https://cruiser54.com/?p=50

You could remove the EGR at some point to check for slight leak by blowing through it.

I called in "dead Jeep" to work and pulled off the EGR valve this AM. Early start since it was bothering me all night. It did have a slight leak. Since I couldn't buy a new one today if at all, I made a quick block off plate and sandwiched it between the valve and intake. I cut a new gasket from Felpro hi temp gasket material. So far, all of the issues seem to be gone!! I think I owe Cruiser a case of beer for this one.

Where are you headed?

Have a great trip.

Thanks!

From the N. CA coast across "The Loneliest HWY" rt50 to Ely NV. Then we will hit the Extraterrestrial HWY and go to Tonopah and Goldfield before heading back home.

Our friends moved to Ely and gave us the 1989 XJ when they left. They got it as a non runner and it hadn't run in 10 years. We had already made plans for a visit and I figured it would be cool to show up in it without telling them. Hopefully, that won't turn out to be a bad idea. 😬

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, we just returned home after 1985 miles in the XJ! The only issues were a failed radiator fan relay, ( I had a spare), flat tire, (plugged It and had patched later) and a broken windshield, (4 weeks old).🙄 The previous owners that gave it to us were very surprised when we showed up in it and happy to see it on the road!

Don't buy me Bud Light please.

On a "lighter" note, there has to be an off the shelf EGR block off plate for those without the ability to make one.

But Htchevyii is in California and it’s required for smog testing.

Only upon change of ownership here. If I can find an operational one or clean mine,  I will put it on though.
