it's more likely a bit of both, but mostly the MJ wasn't selling well at the end.  :(  the XJ was selling like hotcakes and every MJ on that assembly line represented a loss of potential profit that an XJ in that spot would have provided.  dwindling sales numbers, eating a profitable spot on the line, and the dakota already existed (and had an extended cab variant) all worked together to kill off the MJ.  if it was purely the dakota, chrysler would likely have dropped the MJ in 1990 before spending money on the re-do.  in their defense, they gave it a shot.  it simply failed to sell.  :dunno:  maybe we can call it the start of the end of the regular cab truck?

True. Chrysler killed the Comanche because it was too much competition for the Dakota.

 

Also, IMHO AMC royally screwed up by not offering an extended cab. My first XJ/MJ was a 1988 XJ that I purchased new. I really wanted to buy an MJ ... but I needed more secure interior storage space than the MJ offered, so I had to settle for an XJ. An extended cab MJ would have been a game changer.

At one time I owned the '88 Jeep XJ and a 1993 Honda Accord 4-door sedan. Guess which one was built entirely in the U.S. and guess which one had more American-made parts in it?

Yes, about that time frame, mini-trucks were the 'IN' thing. There was even a convertible Dakota. The MJ stayed about the same. The XJ, well there was the ZJ to cover the upscale market. Still, what ever really competed against it?

Ture, and the sales of the XJ continued so DC didn't axe it. The ZJ was also to compete against the Ford Explorer. So, it might have left a void in the market if the XJ was discontinued. Much like the KJ was originally designed to compete against the cute utes. Then it sort of left a void of the XJ's market.
