87 Overland Build

Recommended Posts

I drove the truck today for the first time on the road. It runs really great, but to be honest driving it just made me realize all of the fine tuning needed to get it truly drivable. It’s got a leaky power steering reservoir, and needs adjustment to eliminate severe at very low speed (20?) death wobble. I’ve done no arm adjustment at all to align the front axle other than side to side so I assume this is a major contributing factor. It also lost what I think is an injector seal as I was pulling it back into the shop, which makes me think the seal was more than likely not seated correctly. I’ll get new ones installed tomorrow.

Here she is after the first drive!

That’s my feeling too! Or Evans Creek. I drive around with half an MJ in parts in the back for just an occasion.

LOL!!! I’ve seen your truck! It might even be more than that! I’ve been heading down that road with mine too lately!

I'm trying to meet up with my wheeling buddies at Elbe next weekend. If my new rockers/pushrods fix the 4.0 valvetrain noises, I should be g2g!

Are you bringing your MJ to Elbe? I would warn you not to if you haven’t been there. Or at least stay off the Busywild. Suppose it’s possible to run without body damage.  It’s not as gnarly as it used to be. I’ll follow you and see how your truck does. Lol.

Are you replacing your Cam as well? Be sure to inspect for damaged or flattened lobes!

Yeah I'll take it there, Elbe is one of the places I respect the most (along with Pucker ridge) in WA, with the super steep/long hill climbs you have to be mindful of your rigs capabilities. It's dry right now so traction should be good. BD isn't a big concern, my MJ came pre-damaged :D

However my front end still has a "noise" coming out of the front in 4wd only so it's entirely possible that I just ride along with my friends and give bad advice (I still have dana 60 eyes when looking at lines) that they usually ignore.

Regarding the cam lobes, no, I am not going to go that far into the engine without pulling it. Pulling a cam in the horizontal orientation and expecting to get it out and in without damaging the bearings is asking for trouble. If the new rockers don't fix the ticks then I'll be pulling the whole block for a proper rebuild after the Summer is over

Anyways I'll post up some pics after the weekend!

Correction... We are going to LIBERTY not Elbe, hence the hill climb descriptions.

I only went to Elbe once and I totally walked through Busy Wild in my Scrambler with 33" BFG All Terrains....25 years ago :jammin:

LOL

Pretty sure time and travel have not been kind to that route.

I have never been to Liberty so I look forward to seeing if it lives up to the hype

Oh nice. Liberty is beautiful. Good long steep climbs, loose rocky sections, Duffy thick powder dust and good off camber sections. If your looking for some good night wheeling, have someone run you out to the “XJ drop off” not far from camp.

Its like a 300ft cliff somebody drove an XJ off of years ago. Supposedly 2 of 3 people died in the XJ. It’s pretty amazing up there on a clear night. Have fun. I’m jealous. Need to get back over there. Owens meats in Cle Elum has some of the best bacon and pork chops you’ll ever have. KC bacon and the smoked pork chops. Highly suggest.

Excuse me gentlemen, But the only thing more glorious than bacon or pork chops or wheeling in liberty is the Comanche originally described in this thread… 😂 5032BB10-0454-4385-9CFB-A6C9149434B8.webp.74a0861ffb3c685e64d9746a37476447.webp

Hahaha. This is true. Sorry for the thread Jack. We’ll take this conversation over to the Bacon and pork chops selection thread.

Been quite a busy stretch with everything but the truck! Finally got time to wrench a little this weekend and test drove it again with much more success. Going to have to find another 22 gallon Dakota tank, but she’s getting close!

  • 2 weeks later...

Started figuring out lighting for the bed / camp this weekend. First, I made a little button box that’s discreet bit easily accessible.8D7F99D6-6828-4A14-9150-18791A6DD233.jpeg.7ce3ec5ac7d4aa59ba7033291453ace8.jpeg

This thing mounts in the drivers side corner of the bed right by the tail light.

Still working on wiring it in, but so far so good. The buttons have LEDs that light up when the headlights are on to make them easier to see. I’m also going to use my label maker and label what they are. More to come!
