eaglescout526
Here is a list of parts that happen to be 84-86 specific for parts that are shared between the two Jeeps. I will also list unique XJ oddities that should be snagged as well. MJ specific 86 oddities Spare tire winch adaptor Tail lamps with the silver and black trim set 86 only early style step bumper that mimics the J-truck XJ(and or MJ) 84-86 oddities System sentry. This is a big one. Even if the market is limited I am always in the market for spare parts for this. 84 only A-pillar panels. No screw plug covers 84 only selec-trac bezel with pull knob selec-trac shift bezel 84-85 black 3 spoke steering wheel(with matching interior color) 84 only Small Jeep nameplate on the tail gate 21 slot grill 84-85 waggy header panel. Jeep letters are smaller and offset to the drivers side 85-86 selec-trac switch bezel NP228/9 and its vacuum system to actuate the transfer case 15x6 5 spoke rims 84 only 2.5L air cleaner lid with the decal 84-85? lower dash bezel without tweeter grills diesel cluster Air shock set up 84-85 SJ style visor hook Waggy full red tail lamps, though these can be found on 87-90, I feel they should still be included 84-85 Single nozzle washer cowl and grill 84-86 fenders and front grill assembly have the studs in a different relocation than the 87-96 counterparts. 84-86 Radiator support 84-86 hood latch 86 2.5L CCV system 84-86 charcoal canister. 4 port vs later 2 port 84-86 washer and coolant bottles(86 2.5L changed to the 87-90 style, 2.8L did not) 84-86 used molex connectors in odd places vs metri-pack or pack cons 84-86 rear seat center belt. Doesnt have a cover over the male buckle 84-87 used AMC seat belts which do not work with the later Bendix belts 84-86 Signaltone horns. Fiam horns were used later in 87-96. I have no doubt to suspect these horns last longer and are more likely to be fixed to get working again 84-86 2.5L & 2.8L clutch set up. From the master to the external slave. These use a unique set up that can only be found for these years. The parts inside the bell are stupid rare but also very reliable. Perfect and easy drop in for the 87-90 2.5L and a worthwhile upgrade to do over the later 91-96 external slave where you have to change the bell. eaglescout526
I updated this list with some new stuff. I thought about adding rare and specific stuff like my rear window decal on my XJ but what are the odds of ever finding that in the wild. I will open this up to see if I am forgetting anything. Here is a couple more photos of those wheels: The second photo also shows the 84-85 Wagoneer 21 slot grille and the offset Jeep lettering. Eagle_SX4
Pretty sure it is factory. I have a brochure with a wagoneer with that header panel. I will get a picture in a few hours.

I know the 84-85 has that header except the Jeep nameplate is smaller and offset to the drivers side and has a 21 slot grill. 86-90 used the spider eyes as we all call it and 91-92 briarwood uses the regular header panel which might be the thinking. Eagle_SX4
@eaglescout526 you are correct the above wagoneer probably had the header panel swapped. Here are some pics of the brochure I have. Not sure what year it is. Pretty sure it is 85-86. Front cover Full collection of AMC Jeep and Renault vehicles Wagoneer Back cover Also interesting is I found a blurp about System Sentry. On the Renault page.
Eagle_SX4
Also my theory on why the early Wagoneer front jeep badge was on the side. I think because it was the luxury version XJ they copied the AMC Eagle's badge location as the Eagles were also marketed as luxury vehicles. Just a guess. eaglescout526
Good info on the sentry and that actually makes sense to me.

89 MJ
Photos of several of the 84-86 oddities: 1. A pillar (no screw covers) 2. 86 Air cleaner lid NP229 Transfer case shifter (note the 3 positions for the transfer case shifter: High range, neutral, low range. The 4wd selector is to the right of that, behind the trans shifter) 3. External slave clutch 4. Diesel warning indicators (the gauge clusters also had a boost gauge) 5. The speedometer was different where the cable attaches. The face of the cluster is different as well, but this style was used up until 87, I believe. 6. System Sentry 7. Visor clips 8. Wagoneer tail lights and Jeep emblem location 9. Relay center

Goose_XJ88
Pretty sure the color matched cluster bezel was an 84-86 option part. I have two red bezels and I feel like the light blue was an option as well. I really want to find a light blue bezel to add to my collection.

If you’re good at masking, it can be done. I did it on my MJ to match the charcoal. But I do have a honey one and it’s pretty neat. Had a NOS Baltic blue at one point. Goose_XJ88
Do you have a picture of the Honey? Something else I have to keep my eye out for I guess. I prefer to have a factory one vs painting it myself. I like the authentic pieces.
