Tdi swap?

Recommended Posts

I'm interested in a tdi swap. And before anyone trys to say I shouldn't because of how great the 4.0 is I still love the 4.0 and will buy another comanche eventually anyways. But to people who have done the tdi swap how did you convert wiring harness and what tips would you give on the swap. There's a tdi at my local pick n pull from a 96'99 generation.

Not to be a nay-sayer here, but the absolute best advice I can give you is to open your wallet, close your eyes, and hope you have a high credit limit.

For all things in life there are three options: fast, cheap, good. You are only allowed to choose two at once. This type of project will be ~$7500 on the cheap side. So unless you have quite a bit of disposable income just sitting around . . . don't start it.

If you are dead set on getting it done, google much, MUCH more and read everything. Start with:

I'd do a TDI over the factory diesel.

To start my current project over I would go TDI.

Yeah there definitely better but I rather go with the price of a new r2.8 over the price of building a tdi to have the same power as one.

I had a chance to buy an R2.8 for well under list and passed.  At the time it was very unclear if it would fit in the XJ/MJ chassis and if the emissions systems would fail or could be removed.  I have no idea how many they have sold or if there is any programming available for them now, but I was very leary of what might turn into something that would be unworkable.

Seems like there's a good amount of tuning to them now.

I started to look at the R2.8 swap but it won't pass emissions here.  It was never sold in a production vehicle in the US.  So I started looking at a TDI swap.

There are companies out there that will rework a factory harness to be a standalone setup.  Just hook up a couple of power leads (battery, switched power from the key, a starter wire) and some grounds.  There are adapters for the AX15.  The AW4 is computer controlled so you'd have to do some custom work there.  You'll need to figure out an intercooler.  There's room to have an air to water setup.  Or build a custom core support that lets you run air hoses to an air to air intercooler.

Other than that it's normal engine swap stuff.  Custom motor mounts, custom radiator and heater hoses, custom AC lines.  You'll probably want to get a fresh replacement fuel tank and set up a lift pump that can handle diesel.  Exhaust will be fully custom.

It's a do-able swap.  But you'll need a healthy budget for all the little stuff that adds up well into 4 or even 5 figures.
