Minor Emergency

Recommended Posts

My 88 4.0 Renix Comanche stumbled and cut off today. The garage says it's a "module" underneath the coil. Truck starts and runs as long as the "module" is wet. Once the "module" gets hot, engine runs rough and dies. Will turn over but not start until "module" is cool.

Garage recommends a new coil and "module." However, said "module" is no longer available. My web searches have found nothing about a "module" under the coil. So, I cannot find a part number to search for. Unless it's all one part with the coil?

I suggested unplugging and replugging the TPS, but the garage is confident about their diagnosis.

The owner of the garage is an old time Jeep guy and seems to know his Renix stuff. However, I've always had good luck here with repairs and so, I'm seeking answers again.

Can anyone with experience in this area offer some clarity?

Side note: the last time this shut-off happened, I did just unplug and replug the TPS and it worked fine. Are the TPS and this "module" related? Or, maybe it's just a different cause with similar symptoms?

Thanks everybody!

The coil can be separated from the module on the bottom,

the contact and ground points get corroded.

Do you know if the garage separated them and cleaned up the connections?

We had problems with both of our renix coils here and separating/cleaning the connections took care of our issues.

I think the whole module + coil is considered "the coil" for our cars.

No, they haven't done any work except for basic troubleshooting. Are the coils still available? NAPA didn't have any, said they were discontinued.

Is the separating and cleaning a straightforward procedure?

RENIX ICU/COIL CONTACT REFRESHING

Coil ICM connectors

The contacts between the coil and the ICU on your Renix Jeep can become corroded and loose causing a complete or intermittent no-start condition. I recommend the following procedure as a maintenance precaution to insure this is eliminated as a possible cause now and in the future.

Coil ICM 2-001

The coil is attached to the ICU by two T20 Torx bolts. Remove these two bolts and lift the coil up off the ICU. You will see 2 pins and 2 sets of contacts. Clean both the pins and springy contact pieces with a good electronics cleaner and some fine sandpaper.

Squeeze the springy contacts closer together with some needle nose pliers. Apply some OxGard to the contacts. Bolt the coil back on to the ICU.

While you’re right there, unplug the connectors from the ICU and inspect the pins in the harness connector. Make sure the pins are not retracted into the connector. Spray out the connector and the receptacle of the ICU with the same good electronics cleaner you used earlier.

I feel this procedure should be performed at least once in the lifetime of a Renix Jeep.

The refresh didn't work. Ed, the garage owner, said the resin was also cracked. I assume he means on the coil. Says it will run for about 15-30 mins then shut off. He's pretty confident that I need to replace both pieces, which is fine. However, can someone please upload a good pic of the module? I'm finding multiple non-matching images and since Ed has the truck with him, I can't just look at the part myself.

Sure. If I had the truck with me, I'd go looksee. But I don't. I'll keep looking online.

Is this it?
