Question about Cruise Control

Recommended Posts

Found a 4wd 89 XJ at the junkyard. It’s a limited, so has power Windows, power seats, and a tilt column with cruise control. Can I take the cruise control stuff and column and swap it over to mine without needing to replace the whole harness? My MJ is the same year, but is a base model.

Ok, was worried about harness bc of the mess of wires under the cruise control vacuum motor thing on the firewall. Also, what about the column. I want the whole thing just bc of the tilt part, that shouldn't introduce any complicated new wire harnesses right? And lastly the plastic linkage stuff attached to the turn signal stalk was broken, someone took the steering wheel off and gave up after bending the metal plate.  You can see the broken plastic inside incase the free moving stalk wasn't clear enough. Do I need to find that white plastic linkage from another renix cruise control or is that the same for every turn signal. Sorry if my questions aren't clear I hope the pictures help.

So there’s two vac ports and one wire plug for the solenoid. One goes into the harness into the cab attached to a brake switch above the brake pedal, grab the bracket and the other vac port goes to the reservoir behind the bumper. So you’ll need to grab ever little piece attached to it. I have spare parts for cruise control as well.

Ok, also since its a gm column, do any parts carry over from any gm trucks? Like maybe the turn signal linkage stuff

Yup. It's all GM inside and a lot of the pieces interchange. I have a '92 and I used an '80s GM turn signal stalk for my cruise swap.

Where in Atlanta are ya?  I just moved back to the area

Yeah it's just a Saginaw column. I have used some S10 parts.

Ok great I'll probably just get it and look for an s10 or something for the linkage.

Ok I went and got the column, as well as the vacuum motor, the wire harness that runs to that, the bigger vacuum resevoir and its hoses, the throttle cables and the speedo cable bc it had a wire and censor going to it. The whole ecu was gone, but I found a yellow amc box just laying in the passenger floor. Sure enough it lines up with one of the connectors, and a quick search of the part number brings up an ebay listing for one calling it a cruise control box. So I'm glad I found that, hoping the rain water from the missing sunroof didnt kill it.

I have a metric ton of those regulators(yellow AMC box). Very rarely do they fail or not work but if it has been exposed to moisture for years, expect there to be some corrosion as it is not perfectly sealed.
Fun fact, Dana, the axle makers had a division that used to make all those cruise control kits. AMC got the exclusive contract for those kits to be more factory and professional than what you would get from say Sears or the other big 3 makers.

The only major difference between the two set ups is that the manual trans has a switch that sits above the pedal and disengages cruise for shifting. But it’s better to have the automatic set up as it’s harder to find the original clutch switch. You’ll just have to remember when you have cruise engaged to not shift unless you tap the brakes to turn off cruise. Otherwise it’s plug n play.

Yeah so the idiot who tried getting the column taken apart with force before giving up at the junkyard damaged too many parts. There were too many internal parts broken and I don't have any on hand already so I returned the column for in store credit at the junkyard. I kept the rest of the cruise control parts though. I just need to find a cruise control column for the 3 spoke wheel. Any year from a gm column in a cherokee should work right?

You could always install cruise with your current column. Just the only thing that you may or may not have is the intermittent wipers which is the only thing the cruise control controls were on. Are you looking to add intermittent wipers as well? Otherwise there is no real difference in a column with cruise vs without cruise.
