1987 Comanche quits running

Recommended Posts

i got my comamche from a friend. it was completely in pieces in the front seat and pickup bed. i knew nothing about jeeps, i had liked the 1960's style pickup trucks, i had a tonka replica. the previous jeep blew a rod out the blick amd still drove it, the entire engine bay is oil soaked. the engine was rebuilt with a 1986 block, cast aluminum valve cover, external clutch bell housing, rebuilt ax5 5 speed, no231j transfer case. i shortened and welded the original driveshaft then took it to a shop to be balanced, rewelded and new ujoints. i had to read forums to learn about jeeps, like which speedometer gear and housing i needed to order, i have soent countless hours tobget it running, made 2 100 miles trips to town then it started cutting out driving and idleing very dangerous. each time i merely touched a different component it would shut off, i would order that part, wouldnt fix it. i started doing cruiser54 tips, not all yet, you would not believe how ghis comanche has dominated my free time and limited money, to be unable to drive it is very frustrating. I owned 8 1964 chevy II novas, rebuilt engines swapped engines and can't figure out what is wrong with the comanche, i have ocd amyway, now i truly have the obsessive comanche disorder.

I'm not going to say this will cure your problem but what about backtracking some wires back to there splices. Check the condition of these splices. Splices have been known to be trouble. Trace each wire back to there splices:

D1_5 - Splice_A
D1_6 - Splice_K

Also you have not swapped out the ECU? Correct?

no the ecu i got didnt match pins. just touched new coil wire  at distributor engine quit, changed coil wire from f350, started but flakey, died a few times, everything is new wiggled every connector didnt die till touched coil wire. new coil new coil module new cap new rotor, new relays, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, new battery, new o2 sensor new map sensor new tps sensor. new spark plugs new plug wires new fusible links new battery cables extra ground cables, extra ground to fuel pump, clean connectors with spray. random shutoff sometimes restart sometimes wait.

every time i would touch a different sensor connector it would die, replace sensor,  touch somewhere else it dies. opened wire looms checked splices resoldered some at c101 bypass. on 3rd new crank position sensor, 2nd o2 sensor, 2nd set spark plugs, keep for spares. clean ground under dash above emergency brake. ecu out twice looks ok no burnt spots, has connectors there too somebody been in it,

I think you going to have to do the bulk head connector. Maker sure you check the fuse block while you have it out. Always a possibility the clutch master cylinder has leaked on the fuse box. I found a wire chaffed though there that would keep my fuel pump running with the key off. Good luck you deserve it

I just thought of something else. Have you ever opened the gas cap after it dies? We had a truck at work that the tank vent was plugged and was collapsing. It would run until the fuel pump created to much vacuum in the tank to be able to pull fuel.

i will try the gas cap i had a couple vehicles that did that. tomorrow i am going to install the new fuel pump diapragm and adjust pressure to 15 lbs, again. was wiggleing wires the 25th time, noticed starter relay wires loose had apart about ten times so far. i will post any news good/bad.

comanche ran for an hour drive 5 miles, most in months. took tbi off replaced diapragm. pressure around 16# close enough. one bolt loose on throttle body got new nuts and lock washers. 3/8 vacuum hose to map kinda loose on tbi port put clamp on, heard a vacuum leak fixed it. clip broke on plug to stepper motor. adjust idle to about 980. i had tightened the starter relay big bolt not sure if thats been problem or not. maybe a wire got moved, its running as of today. thanks for any responses, no clue, everything new. wouldnt start, primed with pump, open gas fittings make sure, finally sprayed brake cleaner in carb hat started right up. first drive in months

  • 3 months later...

Update, my 1987 comanche started to quit running again after 2-3 months running normal. same issue get up to 191 temp, before thermostat opens, engine dies. sometimes restart, sometimes, not. wiggled fuel pump relay wires it shut off. rewired temporary with spade connectors. then it would die begore i could get out of drivers seat and get to hood to wiggle wire connectors. frustrating. then i wiggled the new Siemens crankshaft position sensor plug, it died. cleaned the original

female connector, twisted it upside down to make better contact on the puns and ran 3 tests stayed running. ran a roadtest for over an hour, dudnt cutoff, i ordered a new female connector and fusible links from rockauto. everytime i touched a different connector the engine would die, replaced every one several times, it may finally be fixed to stay running, thanks for all the suggestion, its been very frustratinf to spend thousands of $$ and can't drive the comanche
