watchamakalit
I have searched with no luck. How do I know where to locate the tow mirrors on the door. Can the holes be drilled from inside using the brace as a template?
Pete M
good question. I image once you have the inner brace installed, the holes should be easy to punch through from the inside-out.
CGCWO
Here’s a pic of mine, they were on the truck when I purchased it so I have no idea how they decided the mounting location. They are pretty much perfect for me. Black and chrome are same mirrors just painted. I’d get some measurements, but truck is currently at a shop getting a heart and lung transplant. IMG_3806.MOV Have you ever been inside your doors? Wondering if the brace is in there. Any chance you could pull me some measurements from the edge of the door and down from the window? Just don't wanna drill holes and my brackets not line up. Pete I have concerns with where the brace locates in the door and if I will be able to drill the holes from the inside out. But I haven't been in the doors to look since I got my tow mirrors.

I should have my truck back from the shop doing my trans rebuild in a few days and will get the measurements for you then.

The tow mirrors bolt into the brace which have a welded nut. I've had heeps where I've found them filled over and repainted running normal mirrors. I wondered if all AMC doors had them built in initially and were just installed on all Mjs and Xjs until they were gone. I'm not sure. One thing is certain though, if you have the brace and no hole, drill out the bottom center hole what can be reached from inside door. Then use the hole for measuring. Realistically you could simply just make your own brace and toss in whatever you want. Finding solid factory mj/xj tow mirrors not rusted out internally in the Midwest won't be easy if your that focused on factory setup. I have the door braces and mirrors. Just not sure where they bolt in or where to drill holes for the mirror.

watchamakalit
Never thought it would be this hard to get some measurements. Lol
coheed
These are measurements I took of the mounting holes from my trucks factory tow mirrors. I hope these are helpful
coheed
I should add I think the measurements are from the edges of the door, but it's been quite a while since I took them.
watchamakalit
Awesome. I will do some looking at mine and see if I can make sense of the braces.

I hope these are helpful The measurements are correct. One set is pulled off of the front of the door and the other is from the front of the door handle. I measured everything 1000 times and drilled a small pilot hole. Installed the brace and shined a flashlight through to make sure I was lined up. After confirming location it was on to the step bit and install the mirrors. Pretty straightforward. Finished product pics are in my build thread. They will be coming back off to get painted in near future.

CGCWO
Full disclosure, I’ve been missing in action for quite a bit. I can confirm these measurements are from edges of the doors as shown.
acfortier
What does the inner brace look like? I picked up a set, but curious if the brace is actually needed, or if I can potentially using bolt+nut or even a rivnut to get them installed. Or is the metal on the door too thin? Pete M
it's a piece that goes from the top to the bottom of the door to take the stress off the sheetmetal.

Oh, that looks impressive. Looks like it bolts down from the bottom and a couple of rivets in the center to hold it there. Assuming these aren't to be found anywhere, I'll have to thing of a way to reinforce it.

There are 2 bolts in the bottom of the door and bolts that go through the mirror also go through, and thread into the bracket. The bracket is important to stable mirrors at highway speeds.
