Tailgate won’t open

Just like the title says. Went to open the tailgate today and the handle went all the forward and won’t open now. Is it as simple as pulling it apart and figuring it out? Thanks.

This is all that is to the tailgate latch setup. Could be simple as one of the bars popped out of the handle mechanism.

So did the latches move at all? Is one side loose?

I haven’t had time too fully look but I’m assuming they both came loose

internal failure. pull it lube it up with some graphite spray. replace it otherwise.

are the latches moving?  are they moving, but not quite enough to free the 'gate? is your handle moving freely and returning to the proper rest spot after use?

Handle moves. Right latch is working but the left side isn’t. Unscrewed the handle and both rods are still in (#7 on the diagram). I’m thinking one of them came off on the latch side.

ive taken the bolts from inside the bed, removed the handle and pinched the rods together that actuate the latching mechanism. the rods can bend and fall out of the handle itself.
