Transmission and 4 liter inline 6

What manual transmission goes best with the 4.0 liter inline 6.

AX15, NV3550 and NSG370 all bolt up easily but as jdog mentioned, let us know the use and application.

1988 4x4 with the 4.0 liter inline 6, it would be used as a daily but modded for more hp.

the AX15 may be the best choice... a 95+ with external slave

most members will recommend ax-15 cause it works and can be found easily enough.

I would agree, the AX-15 seems to be the best manual trans offered in the XJ/MJ.  Should be fine for any amount of hp you can get out of the 4.0

AX15 or NV3550 would both be fine. The external slave bellhousing started in 94. Personally I’d just spring for a new ax15. Went through several uses and rebuilds before I got a good one. Keep in mind too that the XJ/MJ ax15 clocks the transfer case down slightly for better clearance although you can make the YJ/TJ version work too.
