Yeah, not saying that you can't reuse parts in a custom fashion, but I'm just trying to save guys some time and aggravation by trying to use non-AX15 parts in a stock configuration......they just don't work, period.  I know, I suffered through it way back when and finally figured out the differences after a billion trips to the junkyard to get the correct parts.

There was even a thread on here a few months ago from a member in a similar situation as the OP is now.  After 5 pages of us telling the guy what he needed to do, I still don't think he ever figured it out.  Anything can be made to work with enough time, imagination, money and fabrication.....but trying to reuse a Peugot crossmember, or an AW4/AX5 one, or any of the other associated bracketry in original mounting locations with an AX15  just ain't gonna work.

Ok, well because of how hard it is to find manual cherokees, I'm probably just gonna use the YJ bracket and move the mount and exhaust bracket. The exhaust won't be that hard, but idk about the mount. The one on the YJ goes backwards and down, the old one on the peugeot just goes straight down. Not sure how or if I can overcome this.

I ended up making a custom cross member from my AX4 / Peugot cross member.  I had both and they are the same it seems.  I paired this with a Daystar KJ01010BK poly mount which seems to be about an inch shorter than a normal mount.

To make the cross member I cut off the top of the cross member and then welded a flat plate on to make it about the height of the ax15 cross member pictured earlier in this thread.

If you don't care about clearance I think you could space down the cross member instead of cutting it.   Likely you will still need to drill new holes.

I wish someone would have mentioned that there was another whole set of bolt holes for you to just move the crossmember back one spot. For the longest time I was hung up on why the YJ bracket and every other XJ/MJ bracket for the AX15, including aftermarket went backwards too far. I found a guy on facebook who lives in Florida, he has a plate and maybe a few other things I can get. I also learned thru him that renix tachometer gauge clusters do exist with a cable speedo, but also that the process for swapping an electrical speedo isn't very hard at all. Not sure if I can get the gauge cluster from him bc hes trying to sell the MJ it's in.

of course they do.  87-90 clusters go right in. :L:   If he has an electronic Speedo, does he have a 91-96?  because that cluster as a whole is not compatible.

also the odo can be adjusted on a cluster so there's no need to keep your old stuff.

He has 2 MJs, both 89, both with a tach, but one is electric one is cable. I'm glad you just said that tho because I wasn't sure about the later model cherokees because of how they are missing a whole connector.

how did he do an electric speedometer without custom wiring?  84-90 were all cabled, 91-96 are all wired.  that sounds like a ton of unnecessary work.

He did use custom wiring. He basically said it was just 3 wires, you run the three from the back of the gauge cluster down to the trans or tc where the speedo cable should be.

the blue one in my photo is the 87-90 and that post is where the cable attaches

I understand, I was asking if everything before 90 was strictly cable speedometers or if there were cables and electric until 91+ came.
