What manual do I have and what gear ration is in the diffs?

Sorry you will have to check both of those yourself. The early build sheets are not the best by any means.

Judging by his build date with the 4.0L he probably has the BA10/5. As far as gear ratio, there should be a metal tag on the diff cover with a PN and the ratio.

Agreed and I'm guessing 3.07 for the ratio. Unless someone has swapped tranny's already and or the gears.

the stock transmission would have been a Peugeot BA-10/5

axle ratio would have been 3.07

but lots of things can happen in 3 decades so you'll want to check and verify that.  :L:  the case for the Peugeot splits into a left and right half (the later AX-15 has a front and rear half).  gear ratio can be checked by jacking up one rear tire and spinning it around exactly twice while you count the times the driveshaft rotates.  If the driveshaft rotates about 3 and a half times, it's a 3.55 ratio.  if it spins around a bit over 4 times it's 4.10.  etc.  Their aren't infinite ratios.  the common ones you might find in the various Jeeps back then are: 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 4.10

I have identified the rear axel to be a dana 44 which I was pretty happy about and also has a factory Lsd .

if it has a limited slip, you'll need to jack up both rear tires and spin them around once. :L:
