MJ Hammer
Hello to you all, as usual I'd like to ask you for advice, this time regarding front towing hooks and brackets I came along to a set of those tow hooks removed from a '98 XJ and I wonder if they would fit the '92 MJ, they look a little different from pictures of '96 and older XJ's and MJ's I've found Being taken from the "newer" XJ line I'm in doubt if they will fit the Comanche Any advice will be greatly appreciated Kind Regards
schardein
It might help if you can post some pics of what you are looking at. I can post some good pics of the 84-96 style tomorrow. I'm sure others here can as well. Right now all I have is this not so good pic.
MJ Hammer
Thanks for the photo, you are right, here are some pics of those hooks, as long as I can tell the brackets seem the same but the hooks are kinga taller at the mounting base
schardein
Here are some tow hooks & brackets I removed from a 91 XJ. All of the driver side, except the last, which shows the different inner nut on the passenger side rear bolt, designed to sit into a large hole in frame. schardein
In addition to the taller hooks, I see the nuts for the tow hook bolts are welded to the bracket. They are separate on the earlier ones. Also, it looks like the later ones don't have to extra set of holes to position the bumper forward for the optional winch. The taller hooks would probably require more trimming of the air dam to fit, but might be easier to use. On the early ones, the tip of the hook is kind of close to the bottom of the air dam, which could make slipping on a tow strap a tad difficult. mjeff87
The only other real difference between early and late model brackets is the top mounting bolt for the bumper. Earlier models bolt through the front of the bumper face, later on the bolt down through the top of the bumper (stock). Nothing a drill and a 1/2" bit can't work around though, lol. I didn't pull them since mine is a 2wd and I hope I never need them...

There is an aftermarket set out there you can buy but the bumper bracket doesn't have the OEM holes to allow the bumper to move forward for the hidden winch.
