Wrangler AX15?

Does anyone know if wrangler Ax15’s will bolt into an MJ? I’m aware the clocking of the tranfercase is different but is it possible to redrill the end of trans to fit the MJ/XJ body better? Reason I ask is I’d like to eventually put an Ax15 into my MJ after I do an axle swap & regear to 4.10 but I can’t find an XJ or MJ with an AX.....but I see tons of wrecked wranglers in the yards around me with Ax15’s and I swear I saw somewhere someone said they can be reclocked to fit our trucks but I’ve searched for about an hour and a half and can’t seem

Here is a jig specifically designed to reclock the transfer case on an AX15.  You could probably make this yourself and save the $50.

Thread talking about doing it.  Sounds like all that is needed is the holes drilled in the back of the trans.  May require a different trans mount as well, didn't read on it too much.

You may not need to change the clocking, assuming you're okay with some of the issues caused by that.  It will fit, but it's super close to the floor, so most guys do a little massaging on it.  The tcase linkage also might need some fiddling.

 

Otherwise just drill the adapter housing.  Instead of that jig you might be able to borrow a D300/NPwhatever clocking ring and use it to transfer punch the holes.  Or just lay it out conventionally or by using a paper pattern.  The hole tolerance doesn't have to be that amazing.

As above....And unless you would like a taller shift rod....... rob one off a fubar xj tranny......the wrangle one might not be to your liking

Thank you all for the responses! I’m glad the wrangler Ax15’s can be made to fit now it sounds like I need to save up and find a good donor to pull one out of! :) anyone have any clue if the piolot bushings where different from the wrangler to the Cherokee ones?

the pilot bushings are the same as XJs of the same year.   I've got a 00 TJ AX-15 in my 88 with the stock TJ clocking and the TJ shifter.  I used the CJ 304 pilot bushing. 

 

Don't forget that you'll want the XJ/MJ AX-15 trans crossmember.
