neohic
Things are moving forward... still slowly. Happy to say that my roof, eaves, and gable ends are totally done! Next on the list is siding on the south side so I can build the carport. I ordered my siding a couple weeks ago and I was surprised to see it delivered yesterday morning at 6:30. The local lumber yard has been great for ordering material from as the delivery guy is willing to take his forklift down the hill and drop off product right in front of the door. The colors I chose to complete the pallet are a tan and kind of a funky patina green. It’ll have a 42” wainscoting all the way around. Feels great to know that I’ll hopefully never have to go on the roof ever again. Not a huge fan of the looks of a steel panel roof but for the cost, ease of install, and typically a lifetime warranty on the product and a 40 year on the finish who can complain? I put the same on my last house and I think it’s just great. This time I’m sort of embracing it more since the siding will match... straight up barn look minus the red paint and white trim. neohic
Thanks guys! Hard to believe that I’m creeping up to one year since the concrete forms went up.

neohic
Seems like every weekend lately has me working on something I wasn’t planning on or helping someone else for a day. Then the next day is spent on the shed, fighting the wind, and just generally not feeling like I got much done. This was another one of those weekends. Last weekend was another yet. Managed to get some paint on the the trim on the front of the shed a week ago. Trimmed out and almost finished the wainscoting today. Feels like eating a whale. I matched the brown from the windows. Didn’t want to bring in another color to the mix. Still need to decide what to do for finishing the big doors but it’ll probably include cutting some panels and painting them white to match the walk door. neohic
Main color of the siding started today. Got three sides wrapped up very quickly as the majority of the trim was already done. Kind of plain color choices in hindsight but it’s not like I’m going to change it. Not much for color opportunities when ordering pole barn siding. Had there been something between the gray roof and black as the next option?... would’ve done that. Something between red and tan for the walls?... yup. The neighbor’s house on either side is a lighter brown so I guess it’ll just blend in. Hopefully more to come tomorrow. I need to finish the gable on the back wall, finish around the windows, and obviously the front of the shed. Then on to the carport. Landscaping, some bushes, and trees should jazz it up a little more too. Maybe next year.

neohic
Perhaps. Not quite on my radar just yet. I need to get the other structure up and basic wiring done so I can get my building permit over with.

neohic
Another day of sneaking in time between needing to get other stuff done and dodging the weather. Three sides are totally done minus slinging some silicone around the window frames. Almost forgot about the snow bars still needing to get on the roof... I found those tucked in a corner. Still a long road ahead.
500 MJ
Looks great Ben. So did you have one year for the building permit timeline? Also, your little pine tree where you take your pictures from is growing :)
neohic
I don’t necessarily have a year to complete, but I did have to ask for a six month extension due to me not having any inspections of activity that the county knew about over the entire winter. The structure is really all they care about until I have my “final”. I have until October before I’ll need to pay for an extension... hopefully I’ll have my permit satisfied by then. Really I just need to have an inspector out to have a look at things. Good catch with the tree too, Brent! It was my intent to see growth with taking my pictures in the same spot every time. Pete M
I know there's a bit of road still to go, but have you thought about what projects you're going to do inside first?

neohic
The retaining wall and garage floor were poured at the same time. Carport, apron, and walkway between the retaining wall and the garage floor were poured the following day.
neohic
Okay... NOW my roof is totally done. That is, until I figure gutters, anyhow. Tough to see but I trimmed out where my exterior lights are going to go also. Then I got rained out for what looks like the rest of the day... as per usual for trying to work on a weekend. neohic
Only a few hours again to work this weekend. Over the past couple weeks I’ve been working with my brother (the original architect/drafter for the shed) to change the carport. Of course I can’t just make that kind of decision on my own so I needed to get the regional building department involved to change the print attached to the permit. In times like these, this isn’t all that easy as their office has been shut down for months now. Emails were past, countless phone calls were made, and in the spirit of government run around I was charged my $50 to splice the print PLUS the $3.50 “convenience charge” over the phone... because I had a choice right now? See, my neighbor to the south doesn’t like me all too much due to this whole project. Haven’t ever met face to face before but the general consensus heard from the rest of the neighborhood is that these people absolutely hate me. In the early stages of construction there was a dusting of dirt along the backside of his fence, the city got involved, and I built the wood retaining wall along the fence line. Next they didn’t care for the size or location of the shed, the city got involved, and they were given all of the public information concerning my project and that I was abiding to the city and county building restrictions. Then a couple weeks ago they complained about deer getting in their yard by jumping the fence from said retaining wall, the city once again got involved, they were reminded again that I was in compliance and that Colorado is a free range state after all. I was actually waiting for that complaint since I noticed they installed a trail camera pointing at my yard. I’m pretty sure it comes down to it that they’re an older couple who have nothing better to do and they don’t like change. Well?... maybe they should’ve bought the property before I did. Anyhow, rant over. The carport change is due to trying to avoid a potential future problem of a single snowflake landing on their fence or property. I decided to change the pitch from north/south to east/west. It’s pretty much the same material just laid out differently than originally planned. So anyways, I started on that today and then got rained out. The new pitch will be a 2.5/12 making the rear of the carport fairly low at just about 5’ at the bottom of the 6x12 horizontal beam. My plan all along has been to set my reserve air tanks from my compressor outside. They’ll live back there and I’ll sheet that back wall to keep the weather off them. More progress next weekend? Nope. I already know I won’t have time.
500 MJ
As always - Looks good Ben. I would not have changed the plan of my structure on my land to appease the neighbors for any potential snow blowing around into their yard. Especially when you are being as punctual as you are with abiding by codes/permits/etc. You hit it right, if they cared so much they could have purchased the property like you guys did! Be careful with this. Give them an inch and you know what it might turn into...

It’s not like I was asked to make this change by anyone. I did make a point to talk with the city about it though. They seemed overjoyed that I’m trying to continue to be proactive about everything. This decision was more so based on keeping the city on my side.

neohic
Does anyone know the weight of four 9.5’ rough cut 6x12s? ... whatever the equivalent of three Advil PMs is. The height at the front of the carport obviously caught up to me with changing the direction of the pitch. Keep in mind that it’s only a 2.5/12. Still a big difference from front to back. The ceiling height will work out great for putting my air tanks at the rear and I’ll still have room for a full size truck backed in, a decent size car trailer, or whatever else might come along. No real plans for what might live there long term.
