The bottom of those tappets indicate that the lobes on the cam are completely worn. 

 

You did the right thing, it was time for a rebuild or replacement.

From what little you are showing us, I suspect the damage was systemic, failure was throughout.

So what do the gurus think of the cam? I know nothing of cams. Obviously has some wear. Maybe ran low on oil or never changed it?
