I ran into an issue today with my BA 10 transmission where suddenly i can only get it to shift into a couple gears.  In neutral and reverse, I take my foot off the clutch and it wants to stall.   Something seems to be messed up in there, and I’m hoping it’s a simple fix.   I saw one video on you tube, where the guy said it might be misaligned shifter rods, but he didn’t really explain how to fix.  Any help would be appreciated!

It is misaligned shift rods, and I've seen the service manager at the dealership where I bought my '88 XJ fix it in about 10 seconds. Unfortunately, that was many years ago, and I don't remember what he did.

 

Basically, you are in two gears at the same time, so they're fighting each other when you start to engage the clutch.

bad luck man, the $$$ that it will cost to drop it, see what´s wrong and fix it does not worth a ba10 you have to options:

 

find an ax15 in good shape that don´t cost an arm or a leg or

 

get a cheap beat doen xj donor, take the aw4 and sell the rest, or keep it for parts...

Before you throw money at a replacement tranny, check more on the Internet and Youtube. The fix does NOT involve removing the transmission from the vehicle. It's done by removing the mini-console, the shift boot, and the shift lever and then manipulating the forks or rods inside the tranny back into the proper alignment. As I wrote above, I've seen it doe, but I've not done it myself. It's a minor operation (for those who know how to do it, of course). It happens -- there MUST be a video out there somewhere that shows how to do it.

Yep. I fixed this issue on lots of medium and heavy duty trucks. Get the shift tower off. You will see 3 rails down in the trans. Get them all lined up so the slots are in the center. Reinstall the shifter. The cause is generally the tip of the shifter wearing and allowing it to slip off a shifter rod.

Isn't there a nylon bushing that snaps onto the tip of the shifter? Is that what wears out??

I don't remember on the Peugeot trans.

Nope -- I mis-remembered.

It's the AX-15 that has the nylon (or Delrin) busing on the bottom of the shifter lever.

Wish I seen this one earlier, yep Cruiser has it right. about a 5 minute fix. Take shift tower off and than align the 3 forks. The tip of the shifter is wearing. If you have a welder add a little meat on the end of the shifter and grind it back to shape as it should be.

Thanks guys - I took the shifter off and it looks to me like all 3 rods are properly aligned.   Not sure what’s going on in there, but fortunately I was able to find an AX15 locally that came out of an 89 XJ.  Planning to swap it out tomorrow and be rid of the Peugeot.

I would still try fiddling with the shift rods in the BA 10/5 before swapping it out. The shift tower is already out -- there's nothing to lose other than a few minutes to try moving them around.

You will need the tcase from the 89,also. Your old tcase will not fit to the AX15. 

 

(I’m guessing you have 4wd)
