BACK-UP LIGHTS

My backup lights do not work.  i ohmed out the wiring and its all good, i have 12V to the switch and when i go into reverse and jumper the contacts, the lights come on.  I'm beginning to wonder if there is something wrong with my B/A10 tranny or if the switch i bought is too short to reach...................any ideas?

If you still have the old switch, check its operation with a ohmmeter across the terminals, by pushing in on the ball. Could determine if switch (old or new) is at fault or is it something internal to the transmission.

Are both bulbs burned out?  I've done dumber myself, sometimes it's the easy ones that get by us.

Do the lights come on when you jumper the switch and you're not in reverse?

Sounds like bad switch to me. Pull it and verify operation before replacing.

ohmed out switches, the old one is bad, the new one is good.  when i jumper the contacts of the switch connector while in reverse, the lights work which tell me that the wiring is good and so are the bulbs.  what in the tranny could be bad?

Since old switch bench tested bad (fails to make contact) and new switch bench tested good (makes contact), its more than likely your problem lies in the switch not having enough travel to make contact. Take that piece of Brand New Junk (BNJ) and tell them you want a newer one before looking into any tranny work.

What year is your MJ? Are you sure it's a ba/10 and are you sure you got a switch for the ba/10? There were overlap years. And I've had parts drones hear me say "four-litre" and select the four-cylinder. Again, different trans.

AFAIK the BA-10 was done after 88 - 89.

The Peugeot BA10/5 transmission is a five-speed, overdriven, light-duty, passenger car transmission used by AMC Jeep from 1987 until mid-1989 in the YJ Wrangler, XJ Cherokee and MJ Commanche with the AMC 258 & 4.0L I6.
The 10/5 transmission had a poor record for durability and service, and consequently had the distinction of being the transmission with the shortest production run in Jeep history. It was gradually replaced by the AX15 during the 1988 model year.

how does the tranny actuate the switch?  i'm thinking that the switch i bought off ebay is too short for the B/A10 and is not being activated.
