rylee144
While driving on the freeway the engine shut down. It would re start but die. After it sat for 15 mins it fired up and drove for 10 miles or so and died again. I parked it and came back in an hour and it was fine the rest of the way home. Original tank and pump. Replaced the filter awhile back. Thought?
Knucklehead97
It sounds to me like your fuel pump is overheating and shutting down. Is it making a lot of noise?
rylee144
No but it only does this at lower fuel levels. Would explain the over heating.
Knucklehead97
Pull the assembly and see if the rubber hose in the tank is good. If it cracked or slipped off then I would think the pump could only get enough fuel when the tank is fuller
Ωhm
^^^ as stated above. Fuel acts like a coolant for the fuel pump. If your sucking air, the fuel pump takes on heat.
rylee144
So there is a chance it's a fuel pump part not the whole thing? Is best to replace the whole pump?
Knucklehead97
Could just be a 5$ hose man.
rylee144
It would appear Knucklehead gets the gold star. I finally had time to drop the tank to inspect the pump. It was full which made it a pain but the job was done. I pulled the pump and it looks like the rubber hose on top was not on all the way and cracked. I'll get a new one and hopefully the problem is solved. Sure would be nice not to have to fill up at 3/4 of a tank all the time.
DirtyComanche
Did you get a hose meant for that, or just some FI hose? Regular FI hose (or carb fuel hose) is not rated for immersion and will fail like the old hose did.
rylee144
This was the hose that failed but it took 30 years to do it.
rylee144
I will be getting a fuel rated hose to replace it
smokey
Just a tip, I had a bad pump issue and bypassed the ballast resistor on the fender well to get the truck home. It raises the the running voltage to 14 from 10 volts. It was just enough to get me home.
rylee144
Got it all back together and it appears the problem has been solved. It has 5 gallons in it and runs. I need to go on a longer drive for the full test.
cruiser54
Another thing to look at when handling the pumps is the spade connectors must be tight and not "wiggly".
