J10 Dana 44 front

Recommended Posts

if the width is similar to the grand waggy, then a mid 90s Isuzu rear 44 could be used to match bolt pattern.

no matter what, it's still going to be low pinion front axle. :(

J-trucks are wide track, about 66" wide.  It's actually an advantage compared with the narrow track Grand Wagoneer axles.  But yeah, you'll need a suitable matching rearend, look in the same truck for that, or get a C&C GM 14 Bolt as it will be close.  Also certain mid-70s F-truck axles were about the same width.

I believe they are driver's drop post 78?  Mine are all passenger drop, and I'd gladly trade one for a driver's drop...

All that said, it's a low pinion D44, I wouldn't do it, it's not worth it.

All you guys are right lol just wanted to see if anyone did it. The G2 is so expensive and I’m just trying to find a cheaper better axle that can match the same bolt pattern and a 8.25 rear

‘80-up are driver’s drop.   Only manual tranny FSJ’s got locking hubs: the automatic trucks used self locking hubs. Wrong bolt pattern. Too wide . most likely you will have  to re-gear.  It can be swapped b converting the truck to leafs or the axle to coils but is it your best bang for the buck?

Its been years since I researched this. I would verify that either of us correct. I have pulled 2 with lockers, 1 is in my garage now. It came from an 84 j truck and I don't think it was a manuel.  The one before that was from an 82 full size cherokee. From what I remember before there were a couple changes that took place in the late 70's to early 80's on those. 1 was open or closed front knuckle, pumpkin location, hubs/bolt pattern. No matter which you choose they will all be wider than your current front axle. I would stay away from the closed knuckle setup, it is a far weaker axle. With all the work involved to do this swap, unless you have it, there are easier and stronger setups with more common to find parts in junk yards or new.

Closed knuckle axles were gone by 73.

Many of the Quadratracs had part time kits installed and manual locking hubs installed in lieu of the drive flanges.
