crumbscomanche Posted April 10, 2018 Posted April 10, 2018 Hi all, Does anyone have a guide or video on headliner board removal? Time to get this thing done. Thanks in advance !
Dzimm Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 I don't know of any guide but you have to remove all the trim that borders the headliner and it will come off. - remove visors and retainer clips - remove any grab handles - remove the lower kick panels if removing a-pillar trim completely - remove completely or pull loose the a-pillar trim - remove the rear trim pieces - remove or loosen the top of the b-pillar trim - lift the edges up over the retainer plates above the doors Once all the trim is out of the way, it can be pulled out the passenger side door pretty easily. Just take your time and it will make sense.
SVPete Posted April 11, 2018 Posted April 11, 2018 And there are two velcro patches at the rear of the headliner, right around the curve on the headliner shell towards back glass. You will have to pull with some force to get the velcro to separate....but gently like Jeep Driver said.....if that makes any sense. You don't want to jack up the shell too badly. If the velcro peels off the headliner shell, you can glue it back on or replace it.
crumbscomanche Posted April 11, 2018 Author Posted April 11, 2018 thanks guys. Got it out all in one piece as far as restoring it, what's the best way to keep it together and clean off the old gunk? and should i put reflectix foil in first, then dynamat, then headliner board?

When I stripped the headliner in my 98 xj, I just peeled the fabric off, then used thick gloves and rubbed the glue off the backer board with my hands because it was so degraded. The glue was almost like damp felt but it rubbed off fairly easily.
Jeep Driver Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 I filled my with fiberglass resin and added mesh to the weakest parts of it. Mine is out now and it will get redone before it goes back in, I thought the foam would hide the roughness of the interior, it did not, I'll smooth it out. But, it won't fall apart now.
SVPete Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 I scuffed the foam and glue off lightly with sandpaper.
schardein Posted April 12, 2018 Posted April 12, 2018 When I did my XJ, I used a shop-vac to remove the old foam. Worked really well. One of my shop-vacs has a paper filter which reduces the suction compared to the regular foam filter.
