Fixing door post hinges

Recommended Posts

Does anyone have any advice for fixing these door hinges? You can see where it is cracked along the backside. I have plenty of 1/8 inch sheet metal but I'm just not sure how to attack the situation.

I would rather not cut the hinges off because it'll be pain re-welding them in the right position.

Its just the top hinge on both sides.

I don't understand how those help at all.

Yeah, I don't either.

If he were to take a chisel or screwdriver and chip away at the crack, he might find that what has actually cracked is seam sealer.

All he needs to do is take a wire wheel to that and clean it up, re-weld it.

The factory had two different repair kits for this problem. Which to use depended on the degree of separation at the upper hinge. A long time ago I bought one of the kits for the less severe repair, but I haven't seen it for many years. My fuzzy recollection is that the repair piece is like a strap with a "hat" in the middle, such that it straddles the hinge and gets welded to the door post above and below the hinge.
