Hey yall, been a lurker here for about a year and finaly got myself an mj. For all i could find, i really don't know that much a bout these trucks. Input on things you guys think i should look at would be much appreciated. So, about my mj... its a one owner all stock 87 pioneer. Its got an auto, 4.0 inline 6, 4wd. Owned by an older gentleman who did his own oil changes every 2000 miles and ziebart rust protection. Its been sitting outside in the PA weather for the past 2 years, but everything runs. 187000 miles. Probly sand it down and repaint and likley replace a lot of the rubber parts(dry rotted from sitting 2 years). Anything else i should look at? Also info on what exactly ive gotten?

Hello! And welcome! Sounds like you have yourself a nice find, mind positing some pictures?

My suggestion on finding parts is on the for sale sections of the various forums and eBay. But alot of parts, pretty much everything cab forward is interchangeable with the XJ. You can findjust about any common items brand new. Such as rubber hoses and fittings.

It may help your search to simply look for XJ specific parts when it comes to things involving the motor such as hoses and fittings.

But, things like the fuel hoses and items extendeding aft of the cab will not interchange directly with XJ parts. So, measuring the lengths you need and comparing to lengths sold will help you as well.

I hope that's a little useful!

On another note, what are your plans for your MJ? Are you considering starting a build thread?

Most things up to the doorpost (B pillar) interchange with XJs.

welcome to the addiction!   :waving:

be sure to pry back the carpet and check for moisture underneath.  there are a dozen ways for water to get underneath and once it's there it'll rot the floorboards :(

Pictures will maybe come tomorrow. I gotta do the paperwork on it yet. My plans for it are a partial restore, basically paint, cleaning the engine, replacing what needs replaced, etc. More distant future I'll prolly do a few cosmetic, lift, lights, tires. Right now I'm trying to figure out what I'm working with. The driver side floorboard was redone, but I'll tear the carpet up and replace it anyway.

The previous owner said its got an iron block, or somesuch, and try as i might i can't find much about it. Was that the renix?

I hope that doesn't mean it has an Iron Duke engine.

The Iron Ducktape! Unless swapped in, the Iron Duke wasn’t used in XJs, MJs or YJs because AMC had their own 2.45L 4 cyl Motor by mid ‘83. Even the AMC Eagles stopped using the dookie by mid ‘83. Postal Jeeps may have used them a bit longer but they had been using the Audi 2.0L in the DJ5-G til ‘79, which was a failure but they work well as parts for VW/Audi diesel conversions.

As an FYI, the same 2.0L was used in Porsche 924 turbos for a couple years and ran well.
