Bought a 3/4 cluster to replace the idiot lights on my 88 (auto, so no tach is fine.  Although a cheap one popped up last night...).

Anyway- installed the oil and temp senders.  when the cluster was installed, it doesnt work.  Speedo was dead (most likely a seating issue with the cable), volt/oil/temp were dead and gas went all the way to the right.  If memory serves, that means grounding issue?

reinstalled the old cluster- gas gauge works fine with that though.  and oil light glows, but Id guess thats from having the different sending unit.

You need to change the sensors from switches. The switches will not work with gauges.

He said he changed the senders.

If all your fuses are good, inspect the circuit flex-foil on the back of the cluster for tears and/or broken solder joints, especially where the connections are made to the cable connectors.

Are the fuses any different from idiot light to normal gauges?

Nope.

I'd check the foil circuit board and all the connections.  They corrode too, especially if it's a junkyard unit that might have been exposed to the elements for a long time.

You can drive the gauges separate if you have a wiring diagram.

No, uses the same fuses. I see you swapped the original cluster back in and it works, so there must be something wrong with the gauge cluster.
