Talon
Found an ax-15 from a 94 Wrangler... Would this fit on my Comanche (1987) 4.0l inline 6 4x4 on both my truck and the wrangler. Is there anything I would have to change or would it be a direct bolt on? I searched the forums and couldn't find anything. Any help would be appreciated!! Green Mesa XJ
It would not just bolt up. First the clocking for the transfer case is wrong for mj. You might make it work but it could hit the body.Transfer case would need to be 23 spline. Lot of little other things but it is a good swap if you’ve got Peugeot transmission.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Talon
Hmm would it be worth it to try and find a transmission from a Cherokee?Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using Tapatalk
Marine1Texas
if you upgrade your going to go to 23 spline. so either you need to change spline out of old transfer case or you need to get a transfer case that has the 23 spline already in it.. Comanche and Cherokee are best bet. mid year 1989 Comanche and up to the 1992. You will need to keep your CPS sensor from your existing, if it is a HO model tans. If you use the 94 Wrangler ax15 you going to have to beat the body above the transfer case up. since the clock is higher. Also make sure you get the cross member the BA10/5 has a different one
desertmike
Didn't want to bash in the tunnel, so I made a template of the bolt spacing. Moved the template to where I wanted it and redrilled the holes. Then filled the original holes with an aluminum rod and jb weld. Also the bolt spacing is NOT the same all the way around so mark the template.
Green Mesa XJ
You might find just the rear housing for a XJ on eBay. But I think the 89-91 ax15 are easier to adapt because the input shaft diameter is smaller and you can buy the pilot bearing off the shelf, for the 94 I believe you have to hunt for a 80’s wrangler bearing although some of these customs shops specialize in these swaps and have the correct bearing on hand for a price. Marine1Texas
We got the ax15 from a wrecked 1989. it also had the transfercase. We did the mod to transfercase to give in low 2wd. I think Desertmike had the best plan for if you wanted wrangler combo.
desertmike
Just looked up clocking. "clocking the ax15 for xj" You don' need to buy an adapter, just use a thin cardboard like a Coors Lite box. Just cut out the tailshaft and the mounting holes. Don't forget to mark a starting point. Then move it to the position you want. I think it was in the 10 degree range. I'd recommend a Budweiser box, it comes with better beer inside

Pete M
you can host your comanche related pictures right here on the comancheclub now. just load them using the "choose files" located below the text box. I installed a wrangler trans and love the bit of extra ground clearance that the clocking gives. I didn't have to modify the sheepmetal at all, though I did cut off a useless aluminum tab on the t-case just to be sure it didn't touch while offroading. Talon
Alright, finally found a transmission. Let me know if it will work? Its out of a 2.0 rwd 1989 comanche. Would it work on my 4.0 4wd?Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Green Mesa XJ
No. Sorry. Even if it is a AX-15 it’ll be completely wrong unless you have the skills to tear both transmissions down to swap over the housing and output to make it work with the transfer case. I believe 1989 is the split year on the transmission. Peugeot and Aisin. Also the Peugeot uses a 21 spline input for the transfer case and the AX-15 is 23 spline. at least I’m pretty sure the ax15 marked the change to 23 spline in 1990 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
