Dzimm Posted September 30, 2017 Share Posted September 30, 2017 So I was changing the thermostat on my 95 XJ due to it running at 160* and found this when I pulled the rad cap off. It was like the hairball your wife leaves in the shower drain for you but in white, with some copper antiseize mixed in. Jeep was running rich due to the 180* thermostat the PO put in it. It has a new rad of unknown pedigree due to the pass side motor mount bolts breaking and sending the fan through the old rad (unsure if this may be part of the mystery). After putting a 195* thermostat in it, it runs at 210* but still isn't running as good as it could. Anyone see anything like this before? But that doesn't explain the hair-like fibers. The cat is definitely a possibility... It was prolly chasing all the stupid mice out here... Green Mesa XJ Posted September 30, 2017 Share Posted September 30, 2017 I’ve never seen a gunked up clog of stop leak like that before, it’s like they dumped it all at once not letting it circulate. Some times tell tale remnants settle around the cap trying to seal the expansion line. Dunno what the PO was trying to seal but they were serious about it. Maybe the heater core went out? My best guess is that the old rad was leaking before it got destroyed. Everything else seems fine and there wasn't any gunk in the thermostat housing at all. It was actually very clean. jdwillys Posted October 1, 2017 Share Posted October 1, 2017 Someone could have gone old school on that radiator in the past, and did a fix using stop leak and added fibers, hair, anything to help stop a leak.
