Oil pump pickup tube

Recommended Posts

I think the original is pressed in. Not sure if they sell them that way or not. I just put in a 'new' pump, I had for 10 years or more. It was not fun to 'press' in the new tube. I had to file down the OD. Also used anaerobic sealant. Not sure if that helps you any.

Not sure if it can be removed safely but the new one WILL have to be pressed in. I was able to install my pickup by heating up the oil pump with a mapp torch, putting a rag around the tube, resting the open end of a combination wrench on the bump and hammering it in. I got lucky and didn't cause too much damage but next time I will pay a shop to do it right, it's not worth the risk.

There is a tool to install the old design pickup tubes correctly, basically its a clamp with a rod attached that you can tap the pick up tube into place.

If the new pumps are ready to go with the pickup tube in place that is the way I'd go. I hate trying to line up the pick up correctly. Some require testing the instillation against the depth of the pan, a real PITA.

Any suggestions for engine sludge? I've changed the oil and ran seafoam for about 100 miles. I'll change the oil again this weekend.

Yep. Forget Seafoam. Use 5 quarts of Rotella T4 and a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil next change.

Exactly what cruiser54 said. Whatever you do Do not use a flush. The key is to slowly remove the build up by dissolving the sludge. The rotella is Diesel oil with a lot of great detergents. Run it in a couple of cars, including my inlaws that was neglected for 50k without a oil change. Every fresh oil change there's signs of improvement.

A flush will only succeed in freeing enough debris to clog the oil pickup tube or do something else just as nasty.

Yessir. And the sludge dissolving can be monitored by shining a light into the oil filler hole........
