Friction modifier is needed only if the diff has a clutch-type limited slip.

I disagree that "most" gear oils already contain friction modifier. My experience is that "most" do not.

My MJ owners manual states 80w-90. If vehicle is equipped with tow package use 80w-140 add 4oz of friction modifier if have limited slip. There should be a tag on the rear diff hopefully

If it is your DD, and you are unable to pull the cover and drain the fluid before buying new stuff, just buy the one with friction modifier and put it in.  Nothing bad will happen.

If you are able to pull the cover to inspect it first, then compare what you are seeing to pics on the ol' Google machine, and see what type of carrier you have, and purchase accordingly.

Oh, as far as brand, I typically buy the Castrol stuff since it is readily available and seems to do well.  I use it in all my vehicles.
