Minuit
I've been considering adding some tweeters to my truck, and one thing I came across was the tweeters for the 97+ Infinity sound system that were mounted in the mirror panel on the doors, like so: Does anyone know if these fit the earlier model doors and door panels? I plan on adding power mirrors at some point and IMO this would be a good use of the space. Are the tweeters they come with any good?
Strokermjcomanche
I tried to mount them before , they didn't fit on the older doors . How about the factory Jensen tweeters?

Dang, thanks though  I have a set of the Jensens, so that's probably what I'll go with.
johnj92131
Where do the Factory Jensen tweeters mount? Under the lower dash panel or somewhere else? Minuit, What trim level Cherokee did those tweeters come from? The only 97+ tweeters I remember seeing were in the arm rest are on the 97+ doors. Looking ahead to a 97+ door conversion on the 86 diesel, I would like to find out more about the 97+ doors those came with. Maybe even find a set for future use. The Jensen tweeters are what go behind the grilles in the lower dash. They have special brackets to point them roughly at the driver and passenger's chest - not the best location for the tweeter, the 97+ Infinity system locates them in a much better position. The Jensen tweeters are just wired in parallel with the door speaker. They're 8 ohm impedance, so if wired in parallel with a 4 ohm door speaker, you will barely notice them. I'll probably be replacing the tweeter in there with a modern one, since I have 4-ohm door speakers and my amp is 2-ohm stable. Any XJ with "Accusound by Jensen" on the door speaker grilles will have these, and it was a pretty common option. Never available in MJs. For the record, you can stuff a 3-1/2" speaker in the same place the Jensen speakers go, but they'll be pointing at your knees. I wouldn't recommend it. Before I had door speakers, I had 3-1/2" speakers in the dash and 4x6 speakers in the factory location and it sounded terrible. My ears are really sensitive, and the treble was just too much. The tweeters I asked about were part of the Infinity sound system on the 97+ Cherokees. It was optional on any trim package, but more often to be found in the higher trims. The tiny amount of research I've done suggests that these have more going on than just being parallel with the door speakers. Pretty sure there is a separate crossover in the door. I'm fairly sure any 97+ XJ is pre-wired for the entire system, just missing the speakers and crossovers.
johnj92131
Thanks for the information! I have a couple of sets of the under dash tweeters but have not taken the time to splice them in to the MJ. Given my hearing problem, I may never get around installing them in the 91 MJ. But if/when I actually do the 97+ doors on the 1986 diesel MJ, it makes sense to make sure I get the good speaker system. Even the door speakers on the 97+ are better than the earlier speakers. Airborne Janitor
I put those little Infinity tweeter panels in my 98 XJ that didn't have them. I took out the factory tweeters and used the tweeter from my Type-R component set. It was a tight fit, I had to dismantle the tweeter enclosure/grille and basically just hot glued the speaker into the gap. Did this almost 8 years ago and no issues, still sounds great. Something to think about if you ever decide to upgrade, be cognizant of the size of the tweeter and whether it will fit there.
Jeep Driver
Anyone have a set of these panels they'd part with?

I did install the dash Jensen speakers a long time ago, but never could hear them. If you have a problem hearing higher frequencies (I do), don't waste your time. As I recall they were 8-ohm speakers and I paralleled them with new 8-ohm door speakers.
