JeepFanactic Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I am gathering parts for a 3 in lift for my 87 MJ. Where can I find the right size shock for a particular lift? What do you suggest? Thanks
DirtyComanche Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 I have Bilstein 24-188197 in the front. I like them. My rears are some super cheap Monroe gas shocks that have been relocated. I don't like them, but they were super cheap... Will upgrade to Bilsteins probably at some point. Or even just a better Monroe or KYB.
strictlyxjs Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 late 90s f150 rear shocks are perfect for a 3 inch lifted mj. i found two brand new monroe shocks in a wrecked f150 at the boneyard. $16 for the pair
Eagle Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Go to the Monroe web site and look up the shock numbers for a stock MJ. Then go to their dimensional charts and find the actual dimensions and end fittings for those shocks: http://www.monroe.com/downloads/install-instructions-guides/MonroeMountingLengthSpecifications.pdf Then look through the listings for shocks with the same end fittings but 3 inches longer. If you're happy with Monroe shocks, your research is complete. If you want a different brand -- look up what vehicle those longer Monroes fit, then search shocks for that vehicle.
shelbyluvv Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I have Zone Off-road Hydro shocks on my truck and they ride very good. I have absolutely no complaints about them.
Eagle Posted February 20, 2017 Posted February 20, 2017 I just remembered that I had these from a similar discussion awhile ago. Might help.
JeepFanactic Posted February 21, 2017 Author Posted February 21, 2017 Thanks Eagle this is really helpful.
Eagle Posted February 21, 2017 Posted February 21, 2017 Those are ALL stock shocks, though. Some were direct look-ups in the Monroe catalog, others I chased down through the process I described above. For shocks to fit a 3-1/2" lift, you'll want to find something with a mid-travel length approximately 3 inches longer. Approximately is good enoigh -- going through the Monroe listings, you'll find that the lengths for one series of shock aren't exactly the same as for another, but both are listed for stock vehicles.
