That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
Alright so, I can post pics tomorrow, but basically I plugged the fuses back in for the brake lights, right? And when I press on the brakes the rear ones do work, but only the left and middle right light up. And then when the running lights are on, then both of them work as they should. Any way I can fix this? Please Help!
DirtyComanche
Buy some new bulbs. Check and clean the grounds. Clean corrosion out of the sockets. Report back if they're still screwy.
That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
Fixed it, however the fuse keeps wiggling lose any sure fire way to keep the damn thing in there? Also I've sprung an oil leak from the valve cover. I assume it's gasket because it looks rigged as a mother@#$%er. Also it smells like it's burning antifreeze, and I'm not sure why. There was a leak but I couldn't find it, I tightened up all the hoses
gogmorgo
The only reason you'd be burning antifreeze is a bad head gasket, and there's a small chance a bad head gasket could also be pushing out oil. Can't hurt to check for fluid cross-contamination.
That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
Alright thanks I'm replacing the valve cover gasket tomorrow, but I'm worried when I get in there it'll be the whole head gasket
DirtyComanche
For the fuse issue you might be able to get a small pair of needlenose pliers into the receptacle to crimp the contacts a little tighter. Or try another brand of fuse, some have a bit thicker blades than others. Does it smell like burning antifreeze from the tailpipe then, or just sweet in the engine bay? If it's white smoke and burning out the tailpipe, might as well just order up a headgasket, intake gasket, valve cover gasket, tstat/gasket... That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
Well it starts sweet, but then smells like it's burning terribly, it's not coming out of the exhaust no, it's just the valve cover. So I was wondering if I could just replace the valve cover gasket instead of the whole thing, but if it's been like that for a while then I might just as well get a new head gasket. DirtyComanche
IMHO, it's probably not the headgasket. I would check that there isn't any weeping of coolant from the usual suspects (radiator/heater hoses, freeze plugs, water pump, radiator, heater core, expansion bottle) and just clean the engine and change the valve cover gasket first. A cork gasket can be had for under $10, so it's a cheapy to try that.
That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
Okay I'll try that thanks!
SVPete
If you really want to fix a valve cover leak, get the good gasket which is a combination of silicone over a metal frame (about $30 from rockauto). No sealant is required for installation. I highly recommend torquing the bolts and working through them a few times (torque, wait, apply torque again). I wasted money on the cork/rubber gasket.....get a good one. I used Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus. De-grease the engine at the car wash, then continue to clean/wash it regularly. That way it is easier to spot problems.
gogmorgo
The only way it could be burning coolant under the hood is if it's leaky onto the exhaust. I'd look at the lower rad hose and driver's side of the radiator for a leak. It could be the water pump or thermostat gaskets too I suppose, or even something spraying into the fan, but if it's definitely getting it onto the exhaust and not into it, it makes a head gasket issue seem less likely. You'd probably be able to see or hear it bubbling out if it was that bad.
That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
I see a small puddle form under the truck daily, and usually it's a mix of oil/antifreeze and I always see it coming from the valve cover. In the morning it almost looks like an exhaust leak but it's actually the antifreeze burning off. When its running obviously)
DirtyComanche
Clean everything up and chase it down. Start with the easy stuff.
That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
Alright today I'm doing the head gasket. And while I'm at it I'll check all the hoses for a leak. However I know it is the valve cover that is spraying a snit bit of oil.
gogmorgo
So that starting with the easy stuff...
87MJTIM
So that starting with the easy stuff... He has to take all the easy stuff off first. So, while he's in there, changing the head gasket is just one more thing. :laughin:

That_Creepy_Guy_In_The_MJ
I honestly wanted 32's but I don't know if that would cause rubbing at that point
