Odd brake light triggering?

Recommended Posts

Alright so, I can post pics tomorrow, but basically I plugged the fuses back in for the brake lights, right? And when I press on the brakes the rear ones do work, but only the left and middle right light up. And then when the running lights are on, then both of them work as they should. Any way I can fix this? Please Help!

Fixed it, however the fuse keeps wiggling lose any sure fire way to keep the damn thing in there?

Also I've sprung an oil leak from the valve cover. I assume it's gasket because it looks rigged as a mother@#$%er.

Also it smells like it's burning antifreeze, and I'm not sure why. There was a leak but I couldn't find it, I tightened up all the hoses

For the fuse issue you might be able to get a small pair of needlenose pliers into the receptacle to crimp the contacts a little tighter.  Or try another brand of fuse, some have a bit thicker blades than others.

Does it smell like burning antifreeze from the tailpipe then, or just sweet in the engine bay?  If it's white smoke and burning out the tailpipe, might as well just order up a headgasket, intake gasket, valve cover gasket, tstat/gasket...

IMHO, it's probably not the headgasket. I would check that there isn't any weeping of coolant from the usual suspects (radiator/heater hoses, freeze plugs, water pump, radiator, heater core, expansion bottle) and just clean the engine and change the valve cover gasket first. A cork gasket can be had for under $10, so it's a cheapy to try that.

If you really want to fix a valve cover leak, get the good gasket which is a combination of silicone over a metal frame (about $30 from rockauto). No sealant is required for installation. I highly recommend torquing the bolts and working through them a few times (torque, wait, apply torque again). I wasted money on the cork/rubber gasket.....get a good one. I used Fel-Pro PermaDryPlus.

De-grease the engine at the car wash, then continue to clean/wash it regularly. That way it is easier to spot problems.

The only way it could be burning coolant under the hood is if it's leaky onto the exhaust. I'd look at the lower rad hose and driver's side of the radiator for a leak. It could be the water pump or thermostat gaskets too I suppose, or even something spraying into the fan, but if it's definitely getting it onto the exhaust and not into it, it makes a head gasket issue seem less likely. You'd probably be able to see or hear it bubbling out if it was that bad.
