big66440
Hey guys I was wondering about the famous WJ brake conversion on my 2WD Comanche. I'm not interested in the crossover steering, just the brakes. I was wondering if there was a hub assembly that could be used to retain the 5x4.5 wheel bolt pattern? as well as any info on actually using 15" wheels with the Akebono brake calipers? I'm running the factory 9 slot steel wheel and would like to keep them if possible. Also will I still have to upgrade the booster and master cylinder combo? I already have the 96 XJ dual diaphragm set up. As always thank you in advance all for the help.
Rockfrog
My 2000 XJ runs 15x7 wheels, 35x12.50's and Teeves calipers. Ran stock steering for a week before parts came in. It bolts up. And D30 hub bolts to the knuckle fine, 1/4" spacers are needed for ujoint centering. Not an issue for 2wd. You're on your own for rotor spacing though (if you add the 1/4" spacer WJ and Explorer S/T rotors can be used). You may need to play with caliper spacing depending on hub choice. Not sure if stock wheels will work or not, it gets pretty tight. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
big66440
More than likely I'll be using Spidertrax spacers/adapters to bolt on my factory wheels. I personally don't like the idea of running re drilled rotors. Do you guys have an idea if the stub shaft that is installed in the 2WD models is really necessary ? Most of the WJ's I've seen at the junkyard are 4WD, thanks.
Rockfrog
Yes the stub shafts are need to put pre-load on the bearings. Otherwise the hub will grenade in short time. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk

Rockfrog
Leave the ears on, they don't interfere with anything, and make it even easier to separate at hub change time (pipe through ears). I guess that makes my 2000 2wd stubs worth something then? When I finally convert to 4wd I'll toss them up. big66440
Good to know the 4WD stubs will be OK to use. Here's where I'm at on this upgrade- WJ Knuckles WJ Hubs WJ Rotors WJ Stub Shafts WJ Lower Ball joints Spidertrax 5x5 to 5x4.5 adapters does this seem right? Rockfrog
Should work fine on a 2wd. Don't forget calipers, I'm not one to trust used calipers. WJ stubs will be from a CV shaft, or use a YJ, MJ, TJ, ZJ, XJ stub .... Splines and dimensions are apparently the same. big66440
Oops you're right I forgot to list the calipers and corresponding caliper brackets. I will try to verify the stub shaft interchangeability when I get a chance.
big66440
Do you know if I will also need to install the WJ booster and MC? I already have the dual diaphragm 96 XJ one installed.
Rockfrog
My 2000 XJ has WJ knuckles and brakes, stock master/booster and prop valve still. New calipers will come with the mounting brackets. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
MeanLemons
U can use 2000 and up XJ hubs or tj hubs. They are the same and that's what people use in WJ steering swaps on XJ and tj
75sv1
As mentioned the late XJ and TJ hubs space things about right. Also, look at 07-08 Dodge Nitro rotors. About 1/16 or so less on diameter than the WJ rotors. I haven't installed my stuff yet. Also, someone did a Dakota /Mustang on the early XJ/MJ spindles on one of the Jeep Forums. Rockfrog
Nitro rotors are just over 1/8" smaller diameter (0.131") but all other specs seem to match interesting find. At 302mm they are still a full 22mm (7/8") larger than the stock brakes. I think we may have a new winner with no drilling required. big66440
Sorry to keep dragging this on and for asking a dumb question but will I need a wheel alignment after swapping in the WJ stuff? I'm guessing the toe may be a little off ? thanks
Rockfrog
Yeah, but if you are competent with a wrench it can be completed on flat ground with a tape measure, a carpenter square and some chalk. Sent from my SGH-I337M using Tapatalk
