I am going to look at a XJ that is for sale. I talked with the owner and he can't afford to pay the mechanic to work on it anymore so he is cutting his losses and buying another car. He has owned it for 4 years and three weeks ago it started blowing fuel pump fuses. He kept replacing them and then it eventually quite blowing them. It still would not start so he took it to mechanic. The mechanic found motor oil in the PCM?? Ya weird he was baffled to because he said the engine has no major oil leaks. So they replaced it with a junkyard PCM and still no spark or fuel. They replaced CPS and still nothing. He said that's all he could afford and the mechanic said it maybe another sensor that is to blame. The mechanic has checked the wiring harness and found no issues with it.

Any other sensor that would cause no fuel or spark? Any ideas or what to look for when I go to check it out?

Does the fuel pump still work?

If it's cheap and in good condition body wise buy it and just get a factory service manual and start testing everything.

I have started a list of things to check and will add those mentioned to the list. He is asking $1000. 179k miles, straight body, clean interior, new headliner, sport and the a/c works.....when it's was running.

If it's straight and rust free I'd gladly pay that.

Even if the motor was blown.

I have a stockpile of 4.0 HO's because of all the rotted XJ's I aquire.

Didn't run KBB numbers, but think that is high for a vehicle that don't run.

I wouldn't say that's it priced unreasonably assuming the seller is an honest fellow but I figure to offer $850 for it.

Offer $500.

Start over with all troubleshooting, right at the basics (air, fuel, spark).  I don't think his mechanic was any good.  Try to get the old PCM (ECM?) with it, because there was probably nothing wrong with it.  Go from there.

Agreed. That wasn't a mechanic, that was a hack. If it keeps blowing fuel pump fuses, it has a short in the circuit. I would put all the old parts (like the pcm) back in it and start with the original components. For all you know in his parts shotgun world title attempt he put in bad parts and complicated things.
