Interest in Rock Rails

I have been waiting for the vender on here to get back to us on the MJ rock rails. It doesn't look like that is going to happen :roll: So, I contacted Mike at Proto Fab- http://www.protofab4x4.com -about modifying the XJ ROCKSOLID ROCK RAILS for the MJ. I am trying to guage interest in these for a group purchase/discount. I would love to be able to go back to Mike and say that there is an overwelming interest in these. Anyone else interested?

i know mike personally and he told me in Dec when i got my bumper, i started to bug him to make me a set out of XJ ones and he told me they won't fit even with modifying...hed have to make a whole different setup to adapt them to tie into the bed in front of the rear wheels...he said if there is enough demand that he would think of supplying them but at the time it was unlikley....also tried talking him into fabbing me up a rear bumper/tire carrier but that sizzled out to...lemme know if he says he will do it and ill talk to him about templating my truck to get the ball rolling

I'd be interested in either/both. I know we're a small market, but if enough of us get together and agree on a package, we should be able to interest someone to do it economically.

The problem with meking the rock rails is the frame has three different angles on it, and they are all different. I am currently trying to find suitable rigs to make jigs out of. Also there are so many different ways to make and mount them, and there truly isn't a one size fits all solution to making the rock rails.

 

 

As for the rear bumpers... I am hoping to have a few prototypes out in a few more weeks. I almost lost intrest in making them cause the demand really isnt there to justify the expense of building jigs.

Really, I will have to check that out. The rail would have to have the supprts under the cab, because there is only about 12 inches of frame available to mount a foot to behind the cab. How many angles are on that part of the frame? Mike says he has a Comanche at the shop, he will be able to work off of that. I just don't know if it is a LWB or SWB? offroader461 - heck yeah, give him a call. I believe the timing is right, a few MJers have expressed interest, and he has a Comanche at the shop giving him ideas!

When I built the rails for Pong (back a few yrs ago, Jeff has the old ones) I mounted them right behind the LCA moount, towards the back of the cab, and about 3" in front of the rear spring hanger and all three angles were different. This was on a LWB rig. I don't know how much of a difference there was in a SWB rig

I just built a set of rails for an XJ, and plan on modifying my design to fit my MJ. If noone comes up with a vendor to produce something that is a direct fit, and you guys like mine, let me know. I'd be up for making a bunch of them.

From the pictures on the website, the rails have tubes that are mounted inside of the foot. Smaller diameter tube into a larger diameter tube system. This angle problem could be solved by cutting the tube use for the feet, at the correct angle, and then welded the mounting plate on( plate-> /= <- foot tube). Just need to make sure the rail legs are all the right length. This sounds like an easy hurdle to pass? I am missing something?- Rich

I made mine with sch 40 POOP pipe. They came out very nice and where not too expensive or hard to do either!!

Mike is working on the design now If you get over there with your Jeep, you could have the first prototype :brows:

I'll take pictures of the rails tonight before they go back on the truck.

 

All 4 legs have different lengths.

 

the legs are a larger tube over a smaller tube, the feet are welded at the proper angles.

 

Simply slid the feet to the proper length while a friend held them in place against the pinch seam. Tack welded them in place, then plug welded them permanently.

 

I'll warn you though, my welds are butt ugly, it was 90* out, and I was welding at 11:30 at night. It truely was a case of turn the wire feed up and go to town, they're just plug welds.

I have talked to detours offroad about some, I tink eagle gave them a scrap rig to do a prototype set, but nothing evercame of it.

 

I know JCR has a lwb mj that the started to do some fabbing on but they have been getting swamped with xj orders so sliders and a rear bumper got put on the back burner.

 

It would be nice to see some sliders for both the swb and lwb and a rear bumper, my old man complains everytime we go somewhere together "damm kid and his lifted truck"

I will let Mike know. I gave up on Detours also. I want to talk Mike into making a rear bumper after he gets done with the rock rails :brows:

really...he made me my front bumper last dec and when i spoke with him and his brother in law (rob) he said there wasnt enough of a demand for them so he wasnt thinking of making them....I'm hoping he changed his mind since then b/c i love the design of my front and wanted some sliders and a rear bumper from him also :D
