Engine tear down

Recommended Posts

So I got a 89 renix and I'm gonna start tearing it apart so I can take it to get machined. I know there's a stroker forum but I just don't wanna make an account at the moment so sorry y'all. My questions is, when taking out the insides, what should I keep? I'm doing a 4.7l. What can I junk and what do I need to keep organized to use later? Thanks

Well you don't NEED to keep anything. But I reused my rods. Everything else will pretty much need to be replaced. You need to keep your main bearing (crank) caps in order along with the bolts (unless you plan to replace bolts aftermarket).

Oh and keep track of the nuts on your rods!! the machine shop lost one of mine and i had to track down a new one. it was 6 bucks from the dealership. \

I would have told the machine shop to find it and pay for it, that's VERY unprofessional on their part.

I attempted, they claimed that they never had it. However I KNOW they did because i reattached all the rod caps to the correct rods when i took it all to get hot tanked and such.

I was fuming pissed. I have never gone back to them again and everyone that I talk to about their shop gets a good piece of my mind. On top of loosing that they "misplace" one of my main caps in their shop, and I had to go up there and find it myself because they swore it wasn't there (it obviously was). AND they never hot tanked the head or pressure cleaned the water jackets in the head, I got home with it before I realized because the head was already painted black so it looked clean... nope!

Needless to say dealing with them was a TERRIBLE experience and I have turned everyone I know away from their shop.

I'll agree with what was said, unless you going for a low dollar one and using the crank AND rods from a 258 so you can save a few hundred on the pistons needed.   12 years ago when I built mine, I used the 258 rods, now that there are pistons readily available to use with the 4.0 rods, I'll be getting a set of them to swap over.   Better quench with a lower compression ratio, along with the normal benefits of using a longer rod.

At this point, since you're not even willing to join the strokers' forum, my advice would be not to throw anything away for now. About the only thing you can be certain you won't be using is the pistons.

You should really join jeepstrokers.com although they tend to be one directional most times...

There is plenty of info out there but when I started piecing mine together I followed a few recipes and if I were to do it again I would likely do it differently now that I know a lot more about Jeep stroker engines...

but Like eagle said just save everything till you  know what your replacing or what your re-using because different strokes for different folks right...
