I can't seem to get a u joint to fit my mj its an 88 4.0 4wd 5 speed. Is it a normal size u joint? autozone has given me two duds so far. A customer behind me, said they can be hard to find one to fit. Never had this problem with my other dana 30s did find two extra bolt hols under my diff cover that had no hole in the cover for them. But I'm pretty sure its stock axle.

Only two sizes were used in the entire production run, Spicer 260x was standard with the Spicer 297x being the other.

If the joints you got were too big, you need the 260x, if the joints you got were too small, you need the 297x (now known as the 760x).

They may have sold you the u-joints for the front drive shaft rather than for the axle shaft. You need Auto Zone part number 1-0174DL.

If that's the case I highly recommend a tack of weld on each of your u joint caps to the axle shaft ears. Even if it's just a daily driver and such those clips like to fly out randomly. I had one leave on the interstate a couple months ago and the cap followed suite. This was with a u joint and clips that were less than 2 years old.....just a suggestion

I did the left side on my '87 MJ last Friday . Tried the AZ part# Eagle mentioned ; no luck. Using 20ton press could only install one clip. Got O'Reilly #365; was just enough shorter and clips thinner that it worked.

We just replaced the front U joints on my son's truck (89 4x4) with the Moog brand (greasable). The Moog part number is 377. We used a 20 ton press to set the joints, and had to carefully spread the ears beforehand so the 'C' clips would fit. The ID of the ears before install should be 3 5/16".
