Tj1
I found a C8.25 with matching gears for $70. It'll need the brakes redone on it but I just redid the brakes on my D35 and was wondering if the shoes, cylinders, drums matched. I'd also have to order some new perches for my SOA. Is this a good deal for this axle and changing brakes/perches?
gogmorgo
Depends on what it's out of. Perches are cheap at the dealer, mopar performance P4120074. Brakes can be as cheap or as expensive as you want them to be. It's a pretty easy upgrade (or so I'm told) to swap on the discs from a KJ. However, if it's a 27-spline axle, I think up to '95-ish, pass for sure as it's not really any better than the d35. You want the later 29-spline version. xjrev10
Yeah 97 or newer will for sure be the 29 spline. Brakes are not the same as a Dana 35 drum. They are actually smaller. Discs are a possibility, not necessarily cheap or simple though. I have ZJ discs on my 8.25. KJ discs are bolt on and probably the easiest. Lots of info out there. Tj1
Yea, its a 27 spline from a 94 xj. I've heard horror stories about D35s blowing apart in different ways. I think I'll buy it and hang on to it as a back up if my D35 ever goes.
benjy_26
An 8.8 would likely be the same amount of work and money to throw under a MJ and will be MUCH stronger than a 27 spline 8.25.
gogmorgo
As I said, the 27-spline really isn't any better than the d35, and it's the same amount of work to swap in any other axle. Unless you get a killer deal on it, (free or better) it's not really worth the effort.

Remember wheel spacers are needed to get the track width to match the front also. Could be an issue for some.
Tj1
I have an 8.8 on my wrangler and have had a lot of issues with drive shaft/pinions/t case seals. Was hoping to stay away from any 8.8s on the manche build

dscowell
Is it possible you can just get a new carrier and shafts for the 8.25 if you just want to switch it over to 29 spline? I have a 8.25 with disks and a LSD and I love it so far. One other thing to keep in mind is the yoke sticks out an inch longer on the 8.25 then the D35. gogmorgo
I imagine you could just put new spider gears into the old carrier, which I'm thinking would mean you wouldn't need to set up the gears again. And obviously the new shafts. Probably also wheel bearings for the larger shafts as well?
Rockfrog
Gogmorgo, the 29spl carriers are slightly different to allow for the larger 29spl spiders, carrier swap is the only way to upgrade the axle that way. Housings/gears are the same though. While that is possible (carrier swap), consider the expense of doing that if you can't swap it in yourself. Though, really you'd only be setting backlash, and the 8.25 has threaded adjusters. It would definitely be the way to go, if your up to it. I recently found a 29spl 8.25 for $75, just to put a price perspective on it. And that's in "everything Jeep must be made of gold" territory.
