Question about swapping in an ax-15 over my ax-5

I was just doing a bit of reading on Novak because I'll be grabbing a 95 Ax-15 from a Cherokee but I can only find a transfer case from a 93 wrangler. I was just wondering if anyone knows whether I'll run into any issues with this setup? What is worrying me is I was reading this off Novak and not sure whether it is applicable to my situation. Novak- "cause of differences in the cut of the gear, as a general rule, one should not interchange 1987-1993 gears with 1994-present gears. These years are not always hard and fast delineations. If one is not absolutely certain, disassembly and inspection is required."

In order to swap the ax15 over to your 4cyl...

You would need a bell housing from a 96-98/99 dodge Dakota with the 2.5L which came with an ax15 from factory...

You would need a good amount of parts to make that swap...

Do you have everything that came with the ax15? Clutch fork, clutch fork clip?

For the most part I did the good bit of research behind the swap already and should have everything needed. I'm just wondering whether there will be an issue using a tc from a 93 wrangler for my 95 ax-15? Not sure if there will be an issue with the input shaft or gear being too long or too short.

Wait doesn't the ax5 fit your motor?

It does but I'm going to be doing some heavy duty off-roading and mountain climbing and I know the ax-5 won't be able to handle the beating.

I was also lost on the reference to the Ax-5 replacement which has no bearing on your actual question. 

 

There is a change that took place to the tail shaft of the ax-15 that may make it incompatible with the older TC but I don't have those years in front of me. I'm thinking you are good and that the change took place earlier than 93 but you'll want to check that.

Mate the bellhousing from the ax-15 to the 4 cylinder? Currently I'm dropping in a 3.4 from a Camaro. Previous to that I had a 2.8 engine.

In that case, the info about needing a bellhousing from a 2.5 Dakota with the AX15 holds.   Your 3.4L/2.8L and the 2.5L all use the same block bolt pattern.   It is NOT common with the 4.0L, and the AX5 and AX15 bellhousings don't interchange on the trans, even though they look similar.   You can spend a lot of money on adapters, or find the bellhousing from the aformentioned dakota with a 2.5 and AX15.   I think the dakota setup uses the external slave setup found on later XJ/TJ's.   

 

The trans and t-case you have should be fine together.  I believe they would both have the smaller 23 spline input/output, and the length should be similar.  Issues arise when trying to use a t-case from an auto trans on the manual trans...

 

FWIW, if driven responsibly, the AX5 will probably hold up fairly well behind the 3.4L.  Mine is doing OK so far, and the ratios on the AX5 are better for offroad and "truck" stuff.  If my AX5 starts making a fuss (It's got 225k on it already) I'll probably just rebuild it or replace with a JY unit, even though I have a 3550 sitting in storage...  (3550 has a stupid high reverse ratio that ticks me off every time I back up... a NSG370 would be a better option than a AX5 or 3550, IMO...)

Right on thanks! Yeah the thing I was confused on was the tc and transmission. As for the bellhousing I'm currently having a b*@$£ of a time finding one but everything else is going pretty smoothe. Thanks for the info

Sorry should have clarified it's not swapping onto a 4 cylinder engine. It's swapping to the 3.4 v6 Camaro engine.

The AMC 2.5L uses the same small bellhousing bolt pattern as the GM 2.8L and 3.4L V6s. The AX-15 bellhousing won't mate to that block.

 

Dodge used the AX-15 behind the 2.5L for a few years in the Dakota pickup. You'll need a Dakota bellhousing to make it work.

The transfer case clocking change is at the transmission not the t case,since you have an XJ transmission the clocking will be fine.

 

Even if you had a Wrangler transmission it's not hard to reclock it.

That's the part I wasn't sure on. Thank you for clarifying that.

Do I still have to use the 80s Camaro clutch for the 3.4 with the AX-15 swapping into it? I know I read I need to use the 84 Clutch but that was under a swap thread for someone with a 2.5, I'm just wondering if that is applicable to me? If so, will I be able to re-use my pressure plate?
