tarmac2dirt Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 Hi, Have a question concerning an 1988 xj cherokee. Thinking of buying this to convert my MJ to 4X4 and wikipedia show dana 44 rear axles used cherokee's for years 1987 to 1991, Tow pkgs only. My question is there a way to know from the VIN #. if the cherokee has the tow pkg. The cherokee is 150 miles from my location so i thought there may be another way to find out if it has a 44 rear axle before i run off to look at it. Thanks
Pete M Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 yeah, even if it came with one from the factory, only a picture will say if it's still there 30 years later.
rmoore1031 Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 88 is a hard year, lots of MJs and XJs made. Problem is its during the Chrysler buyout and transfer. My 88 MJ didn't have a build sheet available online. Found part of it under the bench seat :/ 90 XJ was easier to get. Worth an email to Chrysler anyway.
FrankTheDog Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Being an 88 it probably doesn't have a 44. Not saying they didn't come with them but in all the xj's I've seen over the years I've only seen them in 87's. Even then there were very few.
DirtyComanche Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 Yeah, 87 seemed to be the year that they had them on the shelf and went "Shoot, we better stick these things in some Cherokees before they go bad." Picture only, or you don't know, things get changed over the years. I've bought vehicles only for one a couple parts in the past, swap them out with whatever you have on had and resell. I KNOW people would do that for an XJ D44. Personally I'm going to say you're better off with an Exploder 8.8. They are very plentiful, so they are cheap, and they are strong and have disk brakes.
FrankTheDog Posted March 31, 2016 Posted March 31, 2016 I did exactly that. I had two nice XJ's and the 87 was mediocre. I took the brand new tires off and the Dana 44 and stuck some maypops and a D35 under it and sold it for $200 more than I paid. Then sold the 44 for $300. Needed the money more than I needed the axle.
