No Dash Lights, No tail lights, localized short

Recommended Posts

Hey,

New member here, first post, just bought a 1987 Comanche over the weekend, drives good, new clutch, radiator, ect ect.

My issue is the other day I filled the tank up and the gas tank started leaking, It leaked until it was around 3/4 tank and is fine after that. The leak dripped down on the brake wires running under the drivers side door(after searching these forums, thanks!) and the the back of the vehicle causing a short. The previous owner, or someone down the line new about it because the wires are wrapped with electrical tape.

My question for you guys is being that it only leaks between 3/4 and a full tank, is that the filler hose or gasket unrelated to the tank itself? Should i play is safe and replace the whole shindig, pump, tank, filler, gasket and never have to deal with it again?

Lastly, will the short stop when everything dries up or will i need to replace the wires?

Thanks guys, I'm excited about my new project!!!

Gasoline isn't the best of conductors. If there's a short, it's probably caused by something else... like the gas dissolving the adhesive and/or the electrical tape itself and the wires just shorting against themselves. I'd be willing to bet if you pulled the tape off you'll see some very corroded exposed wires.

Couldn't tell you what gauge it is off the top of my head so you'd have to check. I personally wouldn't use anything less than 14awg for the lights (maybe even 12 for the fuel pump) but knowing AMC it could be 16 or 18. You should be okay putting in whatever's already there. I've got 25 years and 500,000km on my factory wiring.

So ive worked over every inch of the wiring on the underside of the truck, paying special attention to the ground wire. I even spliced the ground wire in the taillight to a new, clean, bolt hole to make sure it was making contact. Still pops fuse.

Could it be something closer to the fuse box? it all gets very tight and confusing around there.

HELP

Try pulling the taillight covers. Pull the bulbs out and try again. It may not be related to the fuel issue. It is very common to see the light bulb socket cause these issues in older trucks.

Oddly enough. I have a strange issue with my park lamps also. I think its something messed up with my headlight switch. Every so often, maybe once every 15-20 tines, when I pull my headlight switch. It blows my park fuse. Havent figured out a true reason. But it's quite annoying

Head straight to the front parklamp sockets.

Got hitch wiring?

front park lamp sockets a "brand new"  I had to cut the factorys off and lengthen the wires and then convert the sockets to the wagoneer sockets when I did my nose conversion, this problem has happened before and after this modification, and I KNOW my connections are properly made.

as for the rear.....   its a disaster, I really need to pull the harness and completely remake it. the previous owner was a "certified" electrician and made a lot of "proper" connections.

So i fixed the short!! I have tail lights and dash lights!!! it ended up being a bad ground even though the ground looked fine......made a new hole and connector and it worked......sorta

after fixing it i installed a new radio and had to splice it for lack on an adapter......now the tail lights are out but the dash lights and fuse are still good.

ive read somewhere that the tail lights somehow run through the radio?? i did have three wires left over from the over adapter i just taped off......do one of those need to be powered? or is all this crazy talk and they are unrelated?

There is a display dimmer feature on factory radios.  When you turn on you lights, the radio display will dim.

There is a dimmer relay that controls the display (see 88 electric manual)
