Hello, have a question on AX15's. Are there other ax15 trans that will work on the jeep Comanche. Mine specific is a 1988 2wd 4L that I want to keep 2wd but install a stronger trans and later install a 8.8 rear. Are there more to look at other than jeeps that have ax15 trans. Will the dodge Dakota work with the correct jeep bell housing? Just trying to get info before I head off to the salvage yards.

If you have a 1988 Comanche, you do not have an AX-15 (unless it was swapped in by someone). The '88s used the Peugeot BA 10/5 transmission (with the 4.0L) or the AX-5 (with the 2.5L).

I know the ba10 is poor (currently ditching mine) but is the ax5 actually bad?

I haven't heard too much about it.

*Scratch that didn't realize he didn't have a 2.5l. So ax5 doesn't apply for him.

yes a dakota ax15 will work but you need a jeep bellhousing, but what eagle has said is also true.

also if you feel like doing unnecessarily large amount of work some toyota pick-ups/supras came with a variety of the ax15 that can be modified to fit.

Thanks for the quick answers. I thought the dodge ax15 would work, just wasn't positive. I'm going to keep looking for the complete 2wd jeep setup though (trans w/ bell housing) and hope to find a external slave cyl. It's time for a new clutch, so I thought I would gather up the ax15 parts before the clutch job. Thanks again!

Some later model XJs used the NV3550.  It is comparable to the AX15.  I don't know specific years.  I adapted one for use in my CJ7 out of a late model XJ and it bolted up to a 91 XJ motor.  May open up your search pattern to include later XJ manual trans 2wd.
