Streetwedg
Does anyone know where I can get the height senser switch for the load leveler system? I have everything else. Just need the switch that mounts on rear axel with rod to the bed.

If you did find a mechanical switch to turn the compressor off and on, how would you keep it from turning the compressor on ever time you hit a bump? Something to think about. Eagle, how to cars with air suspension turn on and off their air systems? The old GMC motorhome had air bags for springs and to level the coach. Remember them? Electro Level I think they were called. Streetwedg
I don't remember if it came on mj's , but it was an option on xj's. Air compressor under hood with hight sensor from rear axel to body. Automatically raised the air shocks when load was put in and lowered when load was removed. Strokermjcomanche
That's the first I've heard of any factory leveling system on an xj / mj . Sure it wasn't an ad on ? I know GM is known for using a system like that . If you have pictures can you post some up ? If you can't post pictures pm me and I'll post them . Streetwedg
No it was an option from factory. I have everything but the switch. Even came with an accessory kit that contained a hose you could screw on compressor to fill tires, basket balls, or whatever,

Are there any part numbers on any of the components you have? I see some kind of a label on the compressor. Can you post what it says? What other parts of the system do you have? Is there a controller or switch inside the XJ? Can you tell us what year/model you got it off of? Or perhaps you purchased it from someone who took it off the XJ? Any information you can provide would be useful. I frequent a number of salvage yards and would be happy to look out for something like this. Modern systems use a delay. I was looking at a kit for my HD, and I was concerned about the same-thing. The kit I was looking at, had a ~20sec delay before turning on compressor or releasing air from valve. In the end, I just used bags, no auto leveling or on-board air. I may add that in the future. I never knew XJ or MJ even came with factory air shocks. Personally, if I was going to do it. I'd use bags, with "cups" on the bottom. The bags are rigid mounted to the frame, and sit in cups on the axle. That way they don't limit axle travel. If I hauled with my MJ, that's how I would implement. HOrnbrod
Edit , Don beat me. :rotfl2: :rotfl2: This system would have been much more useful in an MJ since they were the real load carriers..................

johnj92131
Found this on the GM load leveling system: It also uses a 10 second delay to adjust the suspension. http://www.underhoodservice.com/servicing-gm-autoride-rear-air-suspension/
Marine1Texas
When you find the part make sure you get 2. They do not last very long. We had one on a 85 Cherokee and it seems to last only a few years then stopped turning pump on. We had to do it from under the hood till one days a semi totaled it out. Don, from an engineering standpoint, although I'm not an engineer, just makes sense, I believe this system was sold for the XJ because it would only carry the occasional extra load, the leveling system allowed the soccer mom the extra level of convenience of not having head lights out of aim, drooped rear end etc. The extra "load" was transferred to the "frame" through the air shocks, via the lower shock mount (usually single shear) and the upper shock mount, which isn't really a suspension load bearing area. I have to agree with daking, it would have been sweet if MJs came stock this way.
HOrnbrod
Possibly Ed. This system was only used from 1984-86, the first three years of the XJ's life. This leads me to believe that the system didn't work all that well, or this option wasn't being ordered by enough buyers to justify it's production. Probably a combination of both. It could have even been adapted from an existing aftermarket system. Still, it would be very cool to have.
