Np231 problems

Recommended Posts

So I went up to the mountains today to play in the snow and I notice I could not engage my transfer case out of 2 hi at any speed but when I try at a complete stand still it's no problem. I'm sure the linkage does not need any adjustments, I think it might be something internally.

I find that the "shift at any speed" doesn't always work that great. Typically there will be a bit of binding that prevents the gears from engaging or releasing. Lifting off the throttle is usually enough, but sometimes I've had to shift to neutral and/or roll to a stop as well to get it to shift. It's normal. So long as it engages.

Per the owner's manual, you can shift between high ranges (2wd, 4hi part-time, or 4hi full-time if equipped) "at any legal speed".

For shifting into or out of neutral or low-range, it recommends the trans is in neutral and vehicle speed is below 3mph.

Oh my gosh, you guys.

Here's how the factory suggests you shift the transfer case and I've been doing this since these things were new and I worked at the dealership. Quoted from the owner's manual. The suggestions in CAPS are mine.

"To engage, shift the transfer case lever from 2H to 4H while the vehicle is moving at any legal speed". I LET OFF THE GAS, THROW THE LEVER, TAP THE GAS AND LET OFF.

4L position: " To engage, slow the vehicle to 2-3 MPH , shift the transmission to Neutral, then shift the transfer lever to the right and pull firmly rearward to 4L".

TO SHIFT OUT OF 4L, SHIFT THE TRANSMISSION INTO NEUTRAL WITH THE VEHICLE STOPPED, SHIFT THE TRANSFER CASE LEVER TO 2H, THEN THE TRANS TO D IF YOU HAVE AN AUTOMATIC, OR INTO FIRST GEAR WITH A MANUAL, AND CONTINUE ON.
