I think a previous owner of my truck swapped in an 8.25 but he also put on a beefy diff cover so it's hard for me to tell just by the cover pattern.  What do you guys think?

It is a D35....the 3 bolts on the top and bottom are the clue...on a 8.25 they are almost in a straight line across....yours have a slight arc on the 3 top and 3 bottom

To be sure look at the front were the pinion is...the chrysler insignia would probably be cast in the housing

if that axle is from an XJ, make doubly sure that he moved the leaf perches to MJ width.  otherwise your leaf bushings will fail. :(

I will have to look for the insignia tomorrow after I get off work.  The other thing I noticed though was the squarish lip on the bottom that I thought 8.25's had but d35's didn't.

Definitely an 8.25". And X2 on what Pete said about perch spacing.

Yeah it's definitely in 8.25.  I found the Chrysler Badge.  What is the proper perch spacing?  When looking at it, it looks like everything lines up as it should.  I also think they are aftermarket spring perches.  Aren't the bottom of the shocks normally mounted under the axle in stock form?

they are exactly in the stock location in that pic, right below the leafs.   only the axle has moved.  my experience is that stock shocks in the stock location are too short at full droop and too long if the bumpstops aren't adjusted.  not all shocks are the same though, so you'll need to check for yourself.
