cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 23, 2015 Posted October 23, 2015 Picked up this gem today. 1986 Jeep Comanche 4x4 4cyl 4 speed. It'll be mostly a "get it back to daily driver" type build. Already has bullet hole rims and 31" BFG KOs.
1992EliminatorSWB4x4 Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Looks solid for a 1986 and you have rear mud flaps. It's a keeper.
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 25, 2015 Author Posted October 25, 2015 Thanks, previous owner said it doesn't have a lift but when I look at the rear shackle mount it almost looks like new ones were welded on. Would 31" wheels look like this with no lift?
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 25, 2015 Author Posted October 25, 2015 First maintenance parts ordered: full tune up, wiper blades, valve cover gasket, and motor mounts. Waiting on brown Santa now. Cody "The Exuberant One" Quattlebaum
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 26, 2015 Author Posted October 26, 2015 Have to work on this: Gas gauge stays pegged, have to figure out why so I can have an accurate reading. Previous owner replaced the fuel pump so looks like I'll be dropping the tank.
zetabird Posted October 26, 2015 Posted October 26, 2015 looks pretty close to mine hight wise with no lift and 31s. and you shouldnt have to drop the tank to pull the sending unit it should be on the side i think. atleast mine was
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 26, 2015 Author Posted October 26, 2015 Thanks for the input, I'm going to check it out once the weather clears up. I'm going to go with a 2-3" lift.
Crash Posted October 27, 2015 Posted October 27, 2015 Not sure about pre-87, but 87-up, FP is mounted on the side.. No dropping of tank necessary. As much as I do not want an L4, you are better off than the POS GM 2.8.
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 28, 2015 Author Posted October 28, 2015 So, I was getting ready to do brakes when I noticed this: Normal?
zetabird Posted October 29, 2015 Posted October 29, 2015 welded to what the frame? maby part of an old step bar?
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 29, 2015 Author Posted October 29, 2015 Yeah, welded to the frame. Gonna cut them off. Previous owners went wild with gasket maker trying to correct any oil leaks, I cleaned up the valve cover and will put a new gasket down. Also did some routine maintenance and replaced plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, and rotor button. Has a new fuel filter and windshield wipers :) also. All in all it is surprisingly clean under the valve cover (inside). No sign of build up or gunk, the main point that sold me was how well the truck ran. Starts right up and sounds smooth. Motor mounts will be next.
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted October 31, 2015 Author Posted October 31, 2015 Valve cover is finished, also did a oil change, from the looks of the oil it needed it badly. Spending all this time under the hood also helped me find a few other issues, vacuum lines and some wiring that could be cleaned up. Motor are here as well but I'm going to save that for tomorrow, it'll take a little while.
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 Driver side engine mount finished. Old vs new: Passenger side next.
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 True, didn't actually measure it. Nice observation.
zetabird Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Never actually even looked at the motor mounts on mine
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 I bought this last week and when driving home I noticed vibrations when I was pressing the pedal pointing me to bad motor mounts
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 I bought this last week and when driving home I noticed vibrations when I wasnt pressing the pedal, pointing me to bad motor mounts
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted November 5, 2015 Author Posted November 5, 2015 Progress today was tag and title!
cody.quattlebaum.16 Posted November 7, 2015 Author Posted November 7, 2015 Yeah, it's hard to find MJ parts sometimes. Passenger motor mount new vs old. Not as bad as the driver side. Also, the intake/exhaust and oil pan gasket was delivered today. Got to working on that after the motor mounts. Looks like the rear oil pan bolts will be a pain, while under there I did notice the starter was nearly unbolted. I guess someone didn't tighten it all of the way it it loosened over time. Glad I caught that before it became a bigger problem.
