1992EliminatorSWB4x4
Will a new style 1997+ fel pro blue rubber gasket that the newer 4.0 liter use fit ok and seal properly on my 1992 Comanche that has the original aluminum valve cover that I will be re-using. Is this a good or bad idea? Thanks. Bill
teamsmith
Short answer is no. I'm using the newer style blue felpro on my '98 engine with an '89 aluminum cover. I only recently realized that there was a difference in gaskets and that they should match the cover you are using. I have a small leak at the back of the engine that tells me it's not sealing properly. I plan to swap out shortly.
ParadiseMJ
I have an 88 with a blue rubber gasket (I'm assuming for an 88) I've had that cover off at least 4 times and it still doesn't leak at all. So ask the parts store for a gasket for a 92. Unless there's a different reason for wanting the 97+ style.
HOrnbrod
This is the one that you need for the alloy cover: Fel-Pro VS50522T I've been using one for years because I want to keep the oil in the engine, not running all over it.
metrictonner
Make sure that leak isn't coming from the rear CCV fitting on the top of the valve cover. If it is, check its vacuum fitting on the manifold for seal. I can't get my blue gasket to leak no matter what I do.
teamsmith
mine is leaking because I am using the wrong seal. I have the correct one but haven't swapped it out yet.
1992EliminatorSWB4x4
Hornbrod, you sure have one awesome clean sharp detailed engine compartment that you can be proud of. Thanks for the Fel-Pro part number VS50522T, I will buy that one for my 1992. Thanks. Bill
Minuit
Gasket should match the valve cover. If you elect to use the stamped steel 96+ valve cover (if I'd ever get around to putting it on...) you would use the gasket (with grommets) for that also. 1992EliminatorSWB4x4
Hornbrod. Thanks, I ordered my gasket yesterday. Cheaper here. http://www.ebay.com/itm/151435118052?item=151435118052&viewitem=&vxp=mtr You ever timed that 4.6 liter Stroker in the Quarter mile? This is my 3rd 91-92 4x4 Eliminator they are all zippy. The other two were red. Bill
HOrnbrod
No, not in the quarter. but I did make a few runs at the local 1/8 mile track when I first got the stroker in 05. Best time was 9.80 @75mph. 4.6L, AW4, 2WD, with street tires and a camper shell. AW4's and D35's suck for drag racing. Snapped two axles before installing the D44. :rotfl2: Have done a lot more mods since then, but the track is gone now............
shelbyluvv
I have a 93 engine with a 97 stamped cover. I use the new gasket with that cover. On a unrelated note. My engine has had a lifter tap since I put it in a few months ago. I just wrote it off as a old worn out engine. When I pulled the cover to replace my gasket I noticed the front two rockers were hitting the cover. I hit the cover a couple times with a hammer where they were making contact. It got a little better but needs more clearance to remove the tap completely. I got lazy and said screw it, they will self clearance. I'm not sure why the rockers are hitting the cover but they are? About a month or so after I bought my Renix XJ in 2008, I went to Sac raceway for "Mopar Magic" and met up with a few of the dakota guys that I used to hang with. At the time, my XJ was basically stock; 4.0L/AW4/Np231/D35,D30, and newish 235/75R15 Bridgestone Dueler A/T 693's. My time progressively got better as I ran. Best time was 1/4 mile time was 17.4s @ 76MPH in 4WD! Not as good as your run. But I would say pretty damn good for a box on wheels. Wish I could have run my MJ with the 4.56's and the 235/75's, but hopefully someday to set a benchmark to progress. One thing that makes me laugh in my head is when I went to purchase for the race, was when the guy says "This is a Jeep, not a mopar." To this I remarked "Technically 'No', however AMC was bought out by Chrysler therefore it actually IS associated." The guy thought about it and then said "Okay" -------------- Back on topic, I have the felpro rubber gasket on my renix MJ and it doesn't leak a drop. I have the cork POS on my XJ and I think it's leaking again.. For some reason the last time I checked the VC bolts were a little loose as well. This was the case as well when I first bought my XJ. Had an oil leak, checked/tighten the VC bolts and the leak stopped. Now, my rear main leaks.. FML. I just make sure it's filled correctly with oil and am waiting to do an lS-based motor swap at some point.
91Pioneer
I had to torque my bolts three times in a row to get them snugged down properly. Don't tighten them in order once and think you're done.
