vinyl dye and my new black interior

Recommended Posts

Only when I have a good day at the JY. :D

If you haven't caught it by now, he's referring to me. :wavey:

Doh! Here I was thinking jeepco found some secret parts source... "shhhh, don't tell the new guy about mfpdm"

Gawd!

haha, i have a few sources up my sleeve...a few locals who are jeep fans :D one of them has 17 FSJ's, one comanche, and 7 cherokees. i'll end up with the comanche eventually, and it's rust-free but an auto 2.8

Prep is the key to succesfully recolroing interior parts.

aaaand prep. I did. probably not as much as I should have, but IDC really cause this interior is mostly temporary...I will find the parts in black eventually and just swap them then.

JIC you didn't know, black interiors were an AMC-only thing, so you need not look at anything post-'87 in your search for replacement interior parts. I've got all black, and it's a pain for me to find interior parts down here in VA....that's why I'm taking such good care of the original stuff! I grabbed those XJ buckets over a year ago when I saw 'em (same ones as you have), and stashed them away until I could get around to installing them.

Hopefully, I'll get a chance to run down to the 'yard tomorrow sometime. I can look-see if there's any black stuff in there, just let me know what you're still looking for.....

I still need the B-pillar trim, rear under-window trim, lower trim, door panels (4 door), and hockey-stick armrests.

and I do beg to differ...I worked on a 88 4.0 with an original black interior. the guy junked it later when it threw a rod :headpop: and didn't even call me...he got $40 for it and i'd have payed $400 just for the interior.

probably leftover inventory

I'll see if I can't get you any of that from down here. I haven't been to the 'yard in at least 2 months  for one reason or another, and my neighbor says there's a 2WD longbed down there now. Mebbe it's got what you're looking for (but I'll check the XJ's too).

cargo light too please. as long as we're dreaming....

but yeah, anyone on the group if you find anything that could help me with getting ACTUAL black parts that would be great. I mainly want the 3 spoke steering wheel and horn cap right now in black so i can put my other black steering column in it...

Have you done the dash pad yet? How bout a pic. jamminz.gif

I'm curious to see how it came out.

no, i put the glovebox cover and trim piece in it, but to do the dash pad it has to be removed entirely...or i have to tape off a buttload of stuff, and since my dash has developed cracks I am waiting til the 89 is good to drive before I do it.

basically I'll be putting the evaporator in the 86 a/c box i have, then i'll yank the dash from project tatersalad and paint it (I broke the headlight switch mount in all the other ones...i may just fix my red one and paint it), and in one go i'll drain my rad. fluid, remove my dash completely, heaterbox completely, swap the 3800 vin onto the new dash, install the a/c/heaterbox, and reinstall.

so basically I have a mostly black interior with a blue main dash, steering column, and seatbelts.

is that switch for pwr locks :huh???: i was thinin baba louie that i would like pwr windows for my mj

yessir, that it be. came off a 4 door 1986 cherokee with power everything except windows. everything from that truck was saved for me...i pulled it all.

if you want just power locks, go to the junkyard and find a 4 door xj with power windows, take the rear door handles and switch (the rear only has the one switch for the windows) and the connector for the switch with enough pigtails to use it, and get the power door actuator (requires drill), wiring connector, and metal connector.

then it's a simple matter of running about 8 wires that are COLOR-CODED together. there's no way you can mess it up, put a relay for power, ground it, crossovers so the switches control both doors, and wires to actuator.

I've spent waaaay too much time doing them kinda things...any more odd ideas people have had? chances are I've tried it or theorized enough about it to make it work.

from the grave but...

I haven't finished the dash install, though it will take place soon.

the 3800 is off insurance and parked right now due to the cracked frame. that's about 95% finished right now so it won't take much more to do. once that's done, I'll be doing the dash swap with steering column swap, and single key ignition/door lock cylinders. it will also get the a/c box at this time, and everything needed for the a/c except the final adapter for the compressor.

that will about sum up the work on the 3800, other than repairing the bedside. at that point...will be getting rockers redone and new paint on the entire bedside (dr/s), plus black paint on the bottom edge all round.

I decided to FINALLY get the dash swapped. found out that I had 2 dead mice on top of the heater box and alot of mouse crap. now it doesn't smell anymore, suffice to say :D

old dash...when I removed it I cracked the dash completely apart, it was very dry

n69205416_32685068_5353.jpg

new dash. the main part of it is actually vinyl dyed black...it was red before

dash out

I'm happy with it. the steering column will go in when the trackbar bracket is in...can't put the bracket in with the shaft in. the colum is from a 94 xj, which is the same except that it's a chrysler ignition cylinder. converting my doors to the same thing, 1 key entry and ignition. i expect to be driving it again by the end of the week

Looking good Pat.

I might have some trim pieces for the seat back release lever. Didn't have time last weekend to pull them before they ran me out the JY. If they're there this weekend I'll get them. You'll have to use the dye though. One was gray and the other was tan. Might pull the gray buckets if they are still there. Interested :brows: j/k

:P

I have 3 complete sets of grey bucket seats, plus that other set of black ones you sent me, plus the blue ones that were in my truck when I started. I'm all set believe it or not

but, if you find any rear trim in black, or another horn button (the one like the one you sent me) in black, that would be great :D

Ha.....the block had 3 cracks in it, and the slave cylinder went 70 miles after I finished the swap so I got mine. Either way.....you're doin a real nice job there.

Thank you.
